I was in the same boat for a while. I had a female counselor and all I did was whine. I got lucky and she had to go away for a while. I got a male as a replacement, and wow was there a change. He was enough to kick start my mind and I've dragged myself out of my depression.

I'm coming from a similar background, and there is a lot of good advice posted on here. To summarize: Lifting is extremely beneficial, for reasons posted.
