You know this guy has been sacked from two different news organisations for plagiarising when discussing this, right? http://www.theguardian.com/media/2015/feb/16/columnist-tanveer-ahmed-sacked-australian-plagiarism-allegation

Thank you for being a guy with a brain on this subreddit. That's all I want to say. Women's rights and men's rights are not polar opposites. They are individual, with their own wants to change things for the benefit of both genders. That's the whole idea of equality -- to be equal. Going against feminism is the very definition of inequality, and an attempt to see that women will continually have lower status than men in society. Which is wrong on so many different levels, and you've touched on j…

Yes, I hope all those on r/MensRights have their utterly backwards ideas about feminism reinforced by reading a conversation between someone who provided step-by-step evidence to show feminism being intrinsically linked to striving for equality, and your typical feminist-hating MRA spinning conspiracy theories about how women's rights will spell the end of men's. Meanwhile I'll browse some other subreddits, then maybe go for a walk outside, and try to forget about this wilfully misguided and mal…

The problem existed since Obama had to come up with a law to curb it. If there was no problem with pay there would be no need for the law. Frankly I wonder why I even bother finding evidence to back up what I say, since it's becoming clear that you will howl the ills of feminism even when presented with facts to the contrary. And you say this is just feminists pushing the $0.77 line, ignoring the fact that Obama brought it up at his State of the Union address. And how is women getting equal pay …

Well for one, Obama signed the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, meaning that women in the US are given equal pay to men. Feminists back as far as 1913 campaigned for the women's right to vote and run in politics, same as men, and that was accomplished in the US by 1920. Women weren't allowed to practice law in the US until 1971. Men have always been able to practice law. And those are just a few examples. Feminism has come leaps and bounds in the last century on equality for women, but we can and m…

I haven't ignored the rhetoric, actions, and outcomes of the feminist movement. I was saying that equality is the core idea behind feminism, and when people on here say it isn't, I take issue.

Well no, really the OED doesn't work that way. Here are some hateful ideologies that have the subjugation and demonization of a group of humans made clear in the definitions. All connotations for a word are included in each edition of the OED as the English language evolves, if the meaning is as widespread as to constitute an international usage and a fundamental change in the word's meaning. The people who compile the dictionary really do try to make these definitions as clear as possible, and …

The OED is an internationally renowned standard for dictionary definitions, so this isn't 'my' definition at all. It's what the word means. And if you need any more so-called proof then that, then you really are deluded.

You really should say these things to your girlfriend in person. I'd recommend first switching out of texts and giving her a call about what happened. It might be tough but it's better than IMs or text. My guess is her feelings are pretty hurt, and I dunno, maybe she thought you were somehow against feminism. You should find that out and if she interpreted what you were saying as that then you should set the record straight in the calmest possible way. Stress to her that you are not against femi…

Oh no, you called me a cowardly homophobe on the internets! What am I going to do? Try to characterise me as some weird sexual deviant for presenting an opinion you don't agree with, obviously.

Right now it seems like they're not listening to each other and wanting to shout each other down. I suggested that this guy offer an opportunity to have this same discussion in a non-argumentative environment where he won't constantly interject, and she will in turn respect him for it. Trying to shout someone down with your own beliefs is a sign of disrespect for them and a dismissal of what they think. She might in turn be willing to listen and compromise on each other's views if this discussio…

This takes the cake for irony. You realise you made this comment on r/MensRights in yet another anti-feminist thread, right?

I'd think facing someone in an open discussion without dismissing their point and valuing them and their beliefs on equal intellectual footing as yours is the very definition of courage. You're willing to put your personal opinions aside for a moment and hear another point of view. In contrast, sitting on a strongly anti-feminist subreddit getting advice from homophobic dudes whose stock comebacks are 'fucking pansy', 'fuck this asshole' and 'pantywaisted munter' when faced with a dissenting opi…

If you love your girlfriend and want to hold on to the relationship, why would you post about your discomfort over her feminism on the most anti-feminist subreddit? It looks more like you want confirmation that your views are better than hers than any actual advice. If that's your reason for this thread, I would end things as this shows quite clearly that you're unwilling to compromise or have a serious talk with her about what you both want. Nevertheless, if you did in fact come here for some a…

Why not? Best to be doubly sure, and that would be the case if both men and women had a birth control pill. This isn't really anything more than a health issue, unless there's a few Catholics on here who object to the notion of contraception to begin with.

The fact you believe Sarkeesian raising $160,000 isn't justified or somehow legitimised until someone tries to rape or kill Anita Sarkeesian is very worrying.

Gamers are opposed to non-gamers getting a say. Regardless of sex. That by its definition is not an inclusive environment. You're shutting out people who might be interested in games because they're not a gamer. You know what? Maybe Anita Sarkeesian changed her mind after giving that college lecture where she said she didn't play games. It's not like people are born as either a gamer or a non-gamer. Even elderly people have gotten into games, whether they be casual mobile games, or something lik…

I don't seek to hurt you personally, but I do strongly disagree with this faction on Reddit that sports fedoras as their icon of choice and are opposed to women having a say. These hurtful attitudes have been dominant in gaming culture for the past decade. Tone policing is when you criticise someone's tone and ignore the content. I opened that post pissed off, because this entire thread is full of people who seem to want nothing changed in gaming culture with regard to women, the LGBTQ+ communit…

It would be in her business interest to get rape and death threats? Okay buddy, that's more than a bit fucked up. Do a Twitter timeline search for her username whenever she releases a new video. Sarkeesian didn't make any of it up. Numerous game journos screencapped rape and death threats and reported on it.

I'm glad that you aren't as affected as other people. To give you an idea of what I mean, you should read the comments section of any review Carolyn Petit does. The transphobia and misogyny is there, clear as day.

If women, the LGBTQ+ community or people of any ethnicity were given equal representation in video games, it would not affect us in the slightest. We would see more diversity in the stories being told, and fresh ideas being present in games. You're finding it uncomfortable because what we've become so used to is being challenged, and that's understandable. It's difficult to see something that's adverse to the culture we've grown up in. The key is approaching this critically, examining these issu…

Thanks for your concern, Tone Police. Maybe the attempts to try to hold a discussion about this comes off as exasperated from those wanting change because anything they say is shouted down with death threats, rape threats, patronising, sexist "get back to the kitchen" talk and some weird narrative that straight white guys (who are both the majority and by far the most represented in video games) are somehow being oppressed by the thought that the status quo should change. Telling me to "be more …

More baseless attacks. Nice. Yes, let's embrace those who want nothing more than to enjoy video games, and kick out those who have been enjoying it the entire time. "Oh no, its not about kicking you out, it's about bringing in even more people to share in your fun." That's crap and you know it. When did I ever say we should be kicked out? I said that our behaviour should change. The entire premise of your post is wilfully misguided.

Before people (both male and female) made a unified effort to affect change in the game industry, this place went for about a decade as a male-dominated fedora fornicating nerdgasm. Women, people of colour and the LGBTQ+ community were either objectified or portrayed in deeply hurtful ways in games (Objectification of women in fighting games, CoD's love of portraying Russians or anyone from the Middle East as a terrorist, Shadow Warrior's breathtaking racism that Yahtzee even took notice of, or …

And you still can love all those things. All I'm saying is exactly what you have stated at the end: everyone can be who they want to. Masculinity dictates that we should be only into certain types of things. I'm saying that we can be into those things, but we don't have to be too. And for that change in mindset to happen culturally, the given definitions of "masculinity" and "femininity" must change. I'm of the opinion that the words themselves must go, as they are tied to what's essentially mal…

Exactly. And, if she states legitimately positive attributes for a man, then you can strive for those attributes and change her mind in the process. Two birds with one stone! Perhaps the co-worker is having it tough with a man in her life and this is her outlet, you don't really know. Maybe she's never met a dude who's been nice to her. We're only getting one side of the story here, and my advice was to get to know her side a little better. Referring to the female co-worker as a "bitch" or a "cu…

I'm saying that the co-worker should be presented with a man that runs at odds with her current view of men, that'd be a logical and positive way to go about changing her mind. Trying to make this into some feminists-MRA debate will only inflame the situation. I would deal with it in a way that's compassionate, as that would be a positive example of manhood.

Exactly, which is why these words are hazardous. We shouldn't need something to be "feminine" and something else to be "masculine". We should be at the point now where anything can be for anyone, and to put these lines in the sand of what's feminine or masculine only reinforces archaic ideas on how one's gender behaves. Qualifiers only water down the fundamental problems with the terms, saying "some" doesn't excuse the fact that it's still a generalisation, albeit a slightly lesser one. Changing…

Sounds a lot like femininity. They're both concepts from a bygone era that should be taken out of our culture, as they put expectations on their respective genders that are uncalled for and usually unattainable. I'm a guy who can be into sewing, just as a woman can be into weight lifting. Not so, according to masculinity and femininity.

Next time the female co-worker is complaining, I would ask her what she likes about men and then exhibit those qualities. Being rude or confrontational will get you nowhere in these situations. The female co-worker might question and change her views if you are that change.

Someone created this video because the volume and ferocity of comments freely allowed by the media on Julia Gillard's appearance, her ability to have children, the violent language used would never be directed towards a male politician. To say she should 'get on with it' is completely missing the point. We should be having this discussion. The international press loved Gillard, because they had some kind of integrity. Here in Australia, the toxic language and prejudiced vitriol is what dogged he…
