Nothing has been erroneously redefined, it's just a broad term that includes many variables and fluctuates between different levels of degree. Fundamentally it's simply a pattern. The first comment (shorter one) was crafted without a tool - see the message not the messenger (ad hominem fallacy)

Constantly seeking and depending on external validation can be considered a mental addiction. Ultimately it's just a neutral self limiting pattern-loop, like any kind of addiction. Just because it doesn't put you in the ICU or is not as intense as other types and forms of addiction, doesn't mean it doesn't exist. A word can have many meanings - words are merely pointers.
