It wasn’t for survival, it was that it showed you were upper class, because you could afford to eat too much. No different than in asia being pale was “attractive” due to signs of wealth. We need to distinguish actuall physical attraction, better survival, and attraction to signs of wealth.

Nope we interchange imperial and metric for things. Height is always in feet and inches at least in Canadian. TBH my drivers license says how tall I am in cm but I would need to look.
