Men's freedoms have slowly been removed by societies over reactions.And the Japanese police can essentially arrest and hold you incognito while they investigate a case for up to 10 days. You don't even get to make a telephone call home or to work so people know where you are. usually, your family or employer finds out when you don't show up where you are supposed to be and end up being reported to the police as missing.
