This year when NJ legalized recreational, I ended an 8 year sobriety break. Have had many day-week-month-year length sobriety breaks over the the past 25 years. I spent the bulk of my 20's and 30's just having friends that I fucked and rarely being in anything resembling a relationship. Didn't have to run game either. Monitoring 24x7, therapy, and possibly medication. Maybe a little compassion from his parents. I've lots friends to suicide, and it really is a permanent solution to a temporary problem. But coping skills don't come easy subjectively. Do your best to listen and be there for him.
