Personally, I have never heard of paternal grandmothers having positions of high authority, financial or well incharge of the household kind. I asked a few friends, they haven't either. Just curious, would you consider the patriarchy only on the basis of laws? Do social customs count? I am from India and pretty much most girls here have to wear traditional clothes almost everywhere but the boys don't for some reason.
