Honestly that is fine for some women as long as they take all of the responsibilities "traditional women" have to take too. So doing all the cleaning, raising the kids, planning, cooking, providing emotional support, and more. But unfortunately they try to pick and choose so they can be pandered to with a lady who has to do all the above and work.

It would be fine having a MIL like that. Because with a HVM, he'd already set up boundaries against this kind of toxicity and stand up for himself and for his SO when they're crossed/stopped it from escalating beforehand. The MIL's behavior wasn't out of the blue. Toxic people like that always test the waters first to see what they can get away with and then ramp it up. It was the whole "if I were to propose to you, would you accept?" talk. I've always been super into ethical and conflict free jewelry so I ended up digging deep into what he would get me. Also that little bauble is supposed to symbolize your relationship. If you don't like/want it and he's trying to shame you into accepting it... well that's a problem.

An ex wanted to use his mom's old engagement ring. Not for any emotional attachment to it. The ring itself was just showing some wear and tear so his mom decided to get a new (prettier) one. Noooooo. He just didn't want to put the time or money in to buy a ring. I noped right out of there.
