It does sound like he had a past that he feels guilty and ashamed of, which could be why he is this omnibenevolent being in your life, always good, compassionate and understanding. Perhaps he has seen too much hurt, distrust and bad stuff that can happen with toxic people and toxic relationships probably, and that maybe why he is drawn to your sense of naivety ("we always want what we can't have").
