I have to assume the advice to wait so that you have time to decrease your pay/increase her pay is for those that have been married 10+ years and are going to be on the hook for alimony for a long long time. In that case - trying to reduce alimony by say 10k/yr over 10-15+ yrs would offset having to pay an extra 2-3yrs. For short marriages like yours - I don’t think it’s a good idea financially to wait. Sure - you will pay for child support for a long time, but your alimony length will be nothing at 2yrs and splitting 2yrs of marital assets will be nothing. Some states have indefinite after a certain time so delay too long and you’ll be paying alimony until you retire. The longer you wait - the more you will have to split as every cent you save is going to eventually be split.
