I never really understood that advice for short marriages. I have to assume the advice to wait so that you have time to decrease your pay/increase her pay is for those that have been married 10+ years and are going to be on the hook for alimony for a long long time. In that case - trying to reduce alimony by say 10k/yr over 10-15+ yrs would offset having to pay an extra 2-3yrs. For short marriages like yours - I don’t think it’s a good idea financially to wait. If she’s not going to get a job unless forced - you are better off filing. Sure - you will pay for child support for a long time, but your alimony length will be nothing at 2yrs and splitting 2yrs of marital assets will be nothing. The longer you wait - the longer you’ll be on the hook for alimony. Some states have indefinite after a certain time so delay too long and you’ll be paying alimony until you retire. The longer you wait - the more you will have to split as every cent you save is going to eventually be split. The longer you wait - the more raises one usually gets, the more years she is out of the workforce, the older she gets so the alimony amount based on your increasing pay vs her diminishing earnings potential …
