No I haven't lost a loved one to a drunk driving accident but I have been a first responder and no I wouldn't change my tune especially if they were remorseful. I am not a vengeful person. You don't think 10.5 years is a little excessive? Who benefits from this? It costs on average $36k a year to house an inmate. What she did was wild, stupid and did result in the loss of a human life. Yeah this is just sad. She was obviously remorseful and it sounded like she had been working hard to stay sober since the accident. Addiction is a disease and while that doesn't excuse what happened it is still a shitty situation. Personally I think this sentence is excessive. Like I said, she is remorseful and is taking steps to work on her addiction and stay sober. Someone with a paid attorney receives on average a sentence 3 years less than what they would have gotten with a public defender. Being poor is pretty much a crime in itself.

Unfortunately yes. You have the right to an attorney of you can not afford one but the are commonly referred to as public pretenders instead of public defenders. These lawyers have such large case loads, are overworked and have nowhere near the same kind of resources as a paid attorney. Someone that hires a private attorney gets on average a 3 years shorter sentence than they would have with a public defender. Let that sink in, 3 years!
