Set 50% aside every paycheck (treat it like any other tax or bill) and just invest it in either the $spy or a low cost index fund (or ETF) like VSTAX. Set up a Roth IRA and Max out your contributions each year and make sure the money in the Roth IRA is invested (a lot of people eff up and just contribute money but forget to invest it within the Roth).
