This was in the bathroom at a Planned Parenthood today. While the picture is focused on the woman, the wording is gender neutral so you could take it as either of their points of view. When I went to counseling (not at PP), the person doing my intake said that my experience was not rape or sexual abuse. Despite me repeatedly having sex solely to prevent my partner from crying or turning violent, and mentioning that this has since made it difficult to hold stable sexual relationships ever since, …

Ah, the 'more women are killed in domestic violence' stat. Well the numbers actually used to be the same. After female DV shelters started opening up, fewer women were killing their abusive spouses because now they had a different means of escaping their abuser. The rate of men killing their abusive partners has remained unchanged. If you want to save the lives of women, make male DV shelters available.

Yeah, I'm from Washington too. I dated a girl once where her neighbors would fight all the time. It was an appartment, so you could hear it all rather loudly through the wall. It was very clear through the wall that the woman was the aggressor and was physically attacking the guy while he begged her to stop. My friend would call the cops on them all the time clearly saying that the woman was attacking her husband, but the cops came and either scolded or laughed at the man every time. She'd still…

Yes, I couldn't stress this enough. I know that /r/MensRights is largely a lot of knee jerk reactions, and that's okay for the most part. A lot of people get upset about things, and they want a place to let off some steam. That's perfectly fine. The problem comes when our activism becomes purely reactionary. We can circlekerk all we want, as long as it's just to make us feel better. But when it comes to people outside of our group, a lot of us seriously need some work on our maturity levels. Fli…

The MRM does not consider men superior and women inferior. A lot of feminists think of the MRM as all being TRP/RoK/MA101 type people. It's a lot easier to make a claim that those people think women are inferior, and then they can project that fringe upon every other type of MRA, despite most MRAs actively distancing themselves from the people over at RoK and MA101. The whole thing over Elliot Roger is a prime example.

Honestly, this isn't the first time we've been slammed on TV. I can't remember who, but some comedian called us a bunch of hateful bigots or something on a talk show. And Wil Weaton isn't really on TV anymore, but he does have a crazy amount of influence, and he's been spreading horseshit about us for a long time. I'm honestly more surprised that people here even react to it anymore. We should be numb to this by now.

You don't have to write books. A HUGE reason why the feminist movement is happening is because people let it. People silence those against it. People equate 'against feminism' to be 'against women', and will publicly shoot down those that say it. Things like saying 'I'm one of the nice ones!' or NAFALT are just apologetics for the evil ones, or the feminists that ARE like that. Because feminism doesn't mean anything specific other than 'equality' (which it clearly doesn't), how is anyone suppose…

Yeah, my girlfriend grew up in a very similar type setting to you. Her father beat it into her how terrible women were, and she took a lot of it to heart growing up. I had it beaten into me by my peers how terrible men were, and it gave me major trust issues with men. Hurray for socially crippling upbringings! The last straw for me with feminism (as if being told throughout my entire high school career that men were worthless and unnecessary to society wasn't enough...) was being sexually and ph…

I disagree. It's not about how men think, it's about how some men think. I have a few married male friends that flirt a lot with people (especially female checkers), and their wives give zero shits. I have a lot of open/poly friends where flirting with someone isn't only accepted, it's encouraged. Some men are possessive, some men like to share, and others just plain don't give a shit. It should be more correctly phrased as something like If your partner feels insecure about you flirting with ot…

If all the genders were reversed, as in the shooter was female, any mention of gender in the video was switched, etc., feminists would still blame 'the patriarchy' for her killing people. That it was the system that forced her to do it, and she's just some misguided saint brought to the end of her rope by the systematic male oppression that all women (and some men) face on a daily basis and HOW MANY MORE WOMEN (or people, I guess....) That doesn't even qualify as 'rape culture'. The idea behind 'rape culture' is that we live in a culture of rape. We promote, encourage, and glorify rape. Not believing someone was raped seems like the opposite of that. If we really lived in a 'rape culture', you'd think the officials would say 'Well, good for her!'. Compare it to someone saying we have a 'drinking culture' in the US, and you tell your buddy you drank a few good beers last night.

I've known too many people like this, male and female. It's just a couple steps removed from some movie killer. 'I just want you safe, Charlene!' as they brandish a knife. The crazy person genuinely thinks they're a good match for the target for their affections, and will create this deranged fantasy in their head that they're some perfect match. The advice he gives is really good, tell him/her that you believe the rules have changed. That's not what he said. He said it gives her a free pass to do it without telling her husband. He suggested, for her sanity, that she inform him. I agree with what you said. You should talk to your partner about it, not just do it behind their back.

Oh, I wasn't saying he didn't apply it to both genders equally. I just don't agree with it. Either you're obligated to disclose to your partner, or you're not. How many years you've gone without sex doesn't suddenly change it (in my opinion). At exactly how many years/months/days/hours does it arbitrarily shift from 'not okay' to 'okay'? When the US was far more racist towards black people, black people got way longer prison sentences than white men, and had many crimes that only non-whites could be prosecuted for. This problem still exists, but not nearly to the degree that it used to. So, by your same logic, would this be coming from the 'negrachy'? If women got longer prison sentences than men, would we say this stems from the 'matriarchy?' I thought the purpose of the patriarchy was to systemically oppress women, not themsel…

I'm going to play devil's advocate here, but I'd like to first say that this is indeed something positive. In my experience, most of the people I've met who've called themselves feminists have been receptive to the notion that men get abused, and that shelters should exist for them too. BUT... I'm guessing that some of these calls are just drones. Call #1 is the president of that feminist group, but some of the other calls aren't necessarily people able to make any changes. For those complaining about the numbers, it says one in four are victims of sexual ASSAULT, not rape. Sexual assault covers a wider range of things than just rape, hence the numbers being able to be so high. Yes, a source would be nice to have, but it's honestly not an unreasonable number if you're saying 'assault' instead of 'rape.' No, he can't leave the bus. If you listen to the audio, it's clearly stated that he and another boy are not allowed to leave the bus until it is their stop. The driver was alerted. Someone (perhaps the driver?) was calling the police in the video. I don't see how headphones protect you from a beating. Being repeatedly kicked in the face isn't life threatening? Also, after verbal commands to stop, a non-lethal disabling maneuver is the next step up in the escalation of force.

Ooh. We might have an interesting debate going here. I still argue that it's a guilt/shame tactic. I'll use an analogous situation. Let's say a parent and their adorable child. The child wants X, and says 'Please? Pleeeeeease? Come on.... please?'. Some parents give in to their child's cuteness/insistence. You could say that 'Part of the parent wanted to'. BUT you could say that the same parent would feel guilty if they didn't (even if X is frivolous, EG candy). They want to avoid upsetting or o…

I say guilt is more like it. She was attempting to make him feel bad (guilt) about not having sex with her. So just to hammer this point in, if he gave in, the general attitude would be that he was 'lucky'. If the genders were reversed (a man insisting on a sexual encounter with a refusing female cabbie), and the woman gave in, he would almost certainly be charged with rape. Many women will attempt to shame men into having sex with them without even realizing that what they're doing is wrong. I'm a man that has been emotionally manipulated into having sex with women. I continued to have sex with her because I felt like a bad person if I didn't. Then the crying turned to anger and violence. I continued to have sex with her because I was afraid she'd beat me again. In shows like To Catch a Predator, you are correct. Most of them don't get charged with anything because there was no crime being committed. This kind of stuff is really sad. There are real cases of children being sexually abused. They are things to be legitimately outraged about. Why the need for these fake hysterics? I don't understand the point of fabricating these stories when real stories exist. Are the real stories not abusive enough? Just so you know, this is the original post http://weirdsoup.tumblr.com/post/71762080268/wow-wow The author claims to be a 16 year old girl. I don't think the opinions of a random child should really be held up as a standard of 'feminist sexuality'. Come on, we should have way better standards than that. Going through over a thousand peoples worth of feedback and crash logs takes an extremely long time. Getting help handling beta testing does NOT imply that you've lost interest. If a feminist made this kind of leap, this whole subreddit would be all over them in an instant for misrepresenting information.

Eh.... that's a bit of a dark road to travel. There are some very 'angry' MRAs out there, and feminists could use this same passage back at them/us. They view us as being the ignorant faith-based angry people, and themselves as the targets of undue anger. Do be aware that most people who call themselves feminists aren't Tumblr/Reddit feminists, much like most Christians aren't bible thumping bigots. Yeah, or that women should be condemned for wanting to enjoy degradation in a controlled environment. This is actually a very common sexual fantasy for men and women, which is practiced all around the world every day. A kneejerk 'I'm a Christian, so I know this is dangerous!' is not an argument. If she gets off on getting slapped in the face and taking it up the ass, who cares? If she's not being coerced into it, it's really none of anyone's business.... well, except the producers.

She wrote a book titled The Golden Notebook that feminists like to call a feminist classic, but Lessing herself did not consider it a feminist book. Lessing was against feminism. But, yes, it's kind of funny how a 'feminist classic' was written by someone so anti-feminist.

There's actually a big difference between pedophilia and child molestation. Pedophilia describes a sexual attraction, and child molestation describes a sexual action. Most pedophiles are not child molesters, and most child molesters are not pedophiles. It may seem strange, but there are women who like sex with men, but aren't sexually attracted to penises, and men that have sex with women that aren't sexually attracted to vaginas. Now this does not necessarily reflect the validity of the test, t…

Ah, I get what you're saying. A negative stereotype that women shouldn't be leaders, so leading women are called 'bossy' (when they're not actually bossy), analogous to the negative stereotype that men shouldn't be emotional, so emotional men are called weak (when they're not actually weak). I guess being a man that's grown up in a very liberal/feminized area of the world, I've never experienced the stereotype that women shouldn't lead. He's way off from history. The damsel in distress stories that actually coined the phrase 'damsel in distress' were invented by bored nobility-class women who dreamed about a knight in shining armor to come and whisk them away to a better life. It was females creating fantasies of leaving the mundane via male agency. The very name of the trope she's citing refers to stories written by women, told to women, and characterizing men as objects of salvation and sexual/romantic desire.

In Canada, there are zero shelters for male victims of domestic violence. In the United States, there is less than one per state. In the UK, it's not any better either. I don't know about other parts of the world, but I severely doubt the case is different anywhere else. But I'm not sure bringing up mens rights is very tactful for a Spanish class. In most states a man can rape a woman, and if she decides to keep the kid, he can sue for custody. It's not that these screwy laws exist, it's that they're a loophole and a preventative law doesn't exist. It's a side effect from women being able to force a man to pay for a kid he never wanted. If that ability is removed, then this ability would be removed as well.

I hate the whole 'Oh, it happens to women more, therefore we need to discipline men' argument. It's stupid. Let's just say (for the sake of argument) that 9/10 cases of DV, sexual assault, etc, is directionally male to female. The gender doesn't play into the crime, hence it being gender-neutral. How masculine someone is is not an indicator of their likeliness to rape. It doesn't matter if it effects one gender more than another. That's like saying you should focus on teaching black people exactly what prison is and how to avoid it. It's not men that rape, it's rapists. Even if 9/10 rapist are men, there's nothing inherently male about rape, because there's no discernible difference between a female or male rapist.
/r/MensRights20/04/13 12:20 AM

I'd prefer to spread something that clearly says we are victims of rape and not 'a type of rape'. Let me put it this way. Let's say I start a restaurant, and I start selling something called a pooza. You ask me what a pooza is, and I say 'It's a type of pizza'. The first…

OH GEE maybe calling it SOMETHING OTHER THAN 'RAPE' DEFEATS THE PURPOSE. How does disagreeing make me a feminist?
/r/MensRights12/04/13 10:38 PM

So, again, why give us a special term, instead of trying to include us with the term 'rape'? Pushing the term 'envelopment rape' will tell people that it's not rape, not that it is rape. Why not #WomenCanRape or #MenCanBeRaped or #RapeIsRape or a myriad of other things that doesn't still classify us being raped in a subcategory of 'rape'?

Exactly.

Why do we need a special term for our rape? Why not just... y'know... 'rape'?

I'm guessing her size is more of an excuse. Ask her that if you were 100 lbs, and she was twice your size, if she would feel it okay for you to beat her then. This was kind of similar to my friend and his wife. Before they got married, she'd hit him fairly often. He eventually had enough. He said 'If you ever hit me again, I'm leaving'. She hit him again, and he left. She didn't take him seriously until he actually went through with it. They worked things out, they've been married for years, and…

The typical MRA view of feminism is that it's a movement that claims to be about promoting equality in the genders, but it only seeks equity for women, while ignoring equity and discrimination against males. The typical feminist view of the MRM is that it's a movement of patriarchal and misogynistic men whose only goal is to undermine feminism and oppress women, under the guise of imaginary sexism towards men (which they will often say not only doesn't exist, but can't). Feminists claim that soc…

We don't use patriarchy theory. That's a bit like asking creationists to define evolutionary theory for you. The best we can do is parrot back what feminists say about it, but it's really difficult to get one of them to give a concise definition. But, in a nut shell, patriarchy theory is the theory that men men have been in power at the exclusion of women, have made rules to benefit men at the expense of women, and have purposely created a systematic and cross-generational oppression cycle for w…

I don't know your friend, but I'm guessing he, like many others, believes that men are the problem. People want to point fingers at men instead of women. If that wasn't true, then why argue which gender does more damage? What benefit does that bring to the issue? Let's say that men committing DV do 10x more damage on average than women. Okay. Now what? How does this fact in any way alleviate violence? That's why I'm saying it's a red herring. There's nothing inherently male about DV. It's not a …

You forgot to link the video. This was a Superbowl ad. Various feminists spoke out against it as being sexist (sexualizing) towards women.

You might want to look into (as in Google) the rates at which weapons are used in DV cases. Women, likely due to their size, are far more likely to use a weapon in a DV case than a man. A small woman with a knife or bludgeon would definitely do more damage than a large man with his fists. I can't cite the course on that one off the top of my head, but you can probably find it if you search for it. Although I find the point to be a bit moot. What if 75% of the women did the attacking, but men did…

As a group that feels like they're the only ones speaking out against female-to-male domestic violence, I doubt a story of female-to-male domestic violence will get many laughs here. Consider the reaction if you went to r/feminism and posted a similar story of a man doing the same to his girlfriend.

Yeah, I actually try not to play the victim card much. I don't like making it about me instead of about preconceptions, biases, etc. I just thought that if I said I experienced it, and I did feel like it was marginalizing me/us, she'd listen. Actually, I never play the victim card at all, hence that being the first time I brought it up.

I live in a city. Any social group that isn't male specific is going to be feminized.

That's how I felt, yes :(

Yeah, perhaps. I just didn't think it was worth the effort. I was having a hard time getting to sleep as it was.

Well she didn't quite go as far as that, but 'I'm grateful for all the black people in my life that aren't criminals!' would be quite the bigot, yes.

Yeah, my room mate and I went there last night when we were talking. He's black and loves playing the race card on white people hehe.

Thank you. You're right, that would be too far. If I deleted everyone that didn't agree with me, I'd have a friend list of me.

Depends on the jurisdiction, but yeah. The FBI just last year started counting men as possible victims... but only if they were anally penetrated by something, or orally penetrated by a penis. Some jurisdictions are less biased, but most tend to be. It's hard to get anything consistent.

Yes. This. I view it more as male disposability as being a gender issue, and the gender disparity among the homeless to be a symptom of that. So, in my opinion, homelessness isn't a gender issue, but an issue that doesn't necessarily need to be approached as gender-neutral. But I guess that's kind of semantics -shrug-

Well I live in a city, which means that it's a pretty feminized area. And my social circle is a BDSM one, sooooo you put them together, and you get lots of sex + feminism crossing. I knew I'd blow up at someone someday.

Yes, I know. But would challenging her have gotten anywhere? With how much time passed, she would have been the only person to read any future comments on her status. She clearly showed that she wasn't open to discussing the possibility that her offhand comment might have been sexist. But, trust me, it was tempting. I just didn't feel it was worth getting worked up over it again.

Thank you. I kind of expected it to happen when I finally got around to bringing it up... just kinda thought that expecting it would make it less annoying, I guess.

Yeah, she's normally been more reasonable than that. Probably why I bothered saying anything to her in the first place. If I thought I'd be completely ignored, I wouldn't have bothered to say anything at all. People don't read statuses very much on that site.
/r/MensRights09/04/13 05:54 PM

That's how I felt about her. It was just sad that when confronted by her mistake, she decided to dig her heels. She's normally more reasonable than that -shrug-

Oh, I'm done being mad. I do appreciate humor, though :) Yeah, the faulty statistics bug me... like the fact that women are far more likely to admit to using intimidation, violence or the threat of violence to get sex. But it's more the fact that she thinks that 10% somehow warrants every one of our gender to be ignored... that's... kinda... yeah.

Honestly, the sexual abuse was the part of that relationship that hurt the least. The part that hurts is knowing that it would/does get ignored. But, yes, my girlfriend and room mate are pretty supportive. There were more damaging parts of that relationship, but I don't really run into as much... stubbornness with those. It's easier to get people to understand that women can be physically abusive than sexually abusive, it seems.

Yeah, I'm apparently good at writing sound bites. I just decided to end it there because, after that last bit, she clearly doesn't want to listen. And this site doesn't highlight status comments as much as something like Facebook, so she'd be pretty much the only one who sees it at this point. Thank you, though.

Oh, that's a good one. My room mate and I were talking last night, and we were trying to find something along those lines. I was thinking 'I'm grateful to all the women in my life who haven't divorced their husbands for hypergamy!' or something. My room mate tried to go the race route (he's black, so he enjoys making white people uncomfortable with that one haha). It ultimately didn't fruit anything useful. It was like 2am.

Wow! I wasn't expecting so much reaction to this. I went to bed thinking I'd get one or two comments, and I wake up with 63! Thank you so much, everyone. I greatly appreciate everyone's support, and it all seems to be very mature comments too, from the quick skimming I just did. I'll be spending the next hour responding to everyone now haha. Thank you, everyone. As much as the sexual abuse was actually one of the least haunting things about that relationship, the fact that I know it would/does g…

I'm just going to ignore it before I get worked up again. There's no use starting an argument online with just one person. But, really, 'I don't want to marginalize or delegitimize your experience, but I'm going to marginalize and delegitimize your experience'. Saying it's a gender issue does exactly that. It ignores all of us who've gone through that and treats us as some kind of second-rate victim. So, because I was born with a penis, I not only have to be told that I'm the exception to being …
