Companies shipping jobs overseas and the removal of industrial labor and manufacturing jobs decreased the amount of jobs available. Corporations squandering extreme profits while stiffing workers is what makes it necessary to have two workers now. I think if the roles were reversed her family would be calling you a loser or a bum. But they would also be calling her stupid and telling her to break it off with you.
