To put it simply. There is a difference between being smart and being an asshole. Look back on the times where you were talking to these women. Were you acting smarter than her? Were you being condescending towards her? Do you understand the concept of mansplaining? Check these simple things. Odds are you are an asshole.

As a man that went through most (money issues) of a STEM program at a university in Texas I can absolutely assure you that it is exponentially harder for women to go through STEM programs. In just the beginning math courses alone i witnessed many of the male tutors mansplaning (usually incorrectly or poorly) any questions a female student would have.
