If someone attempts to have you executed, how is that morally different from attempted murder? Defamation is defamation. You could also sue someone for defamation, but that only covers the damage to your reputation. The way I would see this working, you would press charges for criminal malicious prosecution with the DA (with or without defamation among the list of charges); if they were to decline to prosecute, or lose the case, then you might consider filing a civil suit for defamation.
