I kinda just wish TRP could just learn about the existing critiques of porn from the other side instead of just being content with this vibes-based critique that just puts all the blame on whatever’s visible (the actress). It’s production and consumption are damaging. Seems like this should be a bridge to understanding eachother a little better and it never is

You don’t understand the first thing about what we want, actually! You make it all about sex so that it’s simple for you to think about. besides pay for it Very American of you

that’s what a therapist is for that’s what sex workers are for You sound like a good, patriotic American. All relationships should be economic! What are we, social animals that need each other?

rich inner universes There’s the tell. The men you deem boring are not you or like you so you don’t have some obvious way of knowing what their inner lives are like. Granted the red pill hustle obsessions are dull but this post is really just a celebration of how interesting you think you are. Newsflash—we are all just trying to get on in the world. Not everyone is going to perform for you in every single moment, some people you actually have to get to know.

I think that’s the way to go about it. And yeah, looking back at this post i shouldn’t have said “only,” bit extreme

Rock solid take here man. I agree too that we can’t act like we can live totally without fantasy, just gotta grow up and become mindful in the meantime.

Actually you’re making it simple when it isn’t. Thanks for clarifying your lack of sympathy. This outlook you have suits you fine since you’ve resigned yourself to being the desired, passive actor, but for those of us who still have lacks in life that won’t be remedied by endless validation and new hobbies life feels a little more hollow. Yeah people don’t exist to fix each other’s pain, that’s what drugs and netflix are for right? I guess i forgot that the only thing that matters is autonomy, p…

I may be wrong but it seems like you’re talking about the narrative of the tropes themselves, my last comment was about the real-life consumer of these tropes. If what you’re saying is that the consumer of the MPDG in feminist circles is read as a lost, depressed soul—I just don’t see that appear in discourse. But that doesn’t mean it’s not there. Again, I really would just trouble this idea that women don’t do any equivalent of problematically bringing the expectations of a fantasy into a relat…

Sure, the dark romance and related desires are critiqued by feminists, but this is exactly where my point lies: the woman reader of dark fantasy is a delicate, innocent, flower, maybe with unresolved trauma, and doesn’t understand the violent ideology she’s absorbing and propagating, while the man who entertains the MPDG fantasy is a piggish manchild. Graciousness, cynicism.

Ok, I’ll accept that. But “again”, don’t most people bring their own fantasy partner into a relationship to some extent? Women are never disappointed with how their real man matches up to the fantasy? I think the unexamined difference here is how cynically the manic pixie thing is read and how graciously women’s fantasies are

Well when we’re talking about film and book characters as you are, it’s easy to have some psychic distance and even make fun of the fantasy. But when we’re talking about how these relate to how we fantasize in life, i think its a bit more complicated. You talked about the dreamboat trope, but are we going to pretend that women’s fantasies are even mostly of well-adjusted, mature and responsible men lol? No violent, brooding, antisocial types? Why does none of that appear like mental illness to y…

I think that’s a valuable point
/r/PurplePillDebate03/04/26 03:33 PM

I don’t recognize what you’ve said in the end in my post. I didn’t really define manic pixie anyway, i just assumed we all knew what it was. You all are insisting on this uninteresting, talked-to-death aspect of this discourse to dismiss the idea of any symmetry of fantasy between the sexes

Everyone here seems to think that im defending the trope/fantasy. I’m trying to relay to you that maybe there is a deeper reason for what it provokes in women. I agree it’s damaging, but everyone here is very focused on how it manifests in this trope w/ regards to mental illness, all of which i think is easy to explain in how it serves this fantasy (which feminists have done countless times). My problem is how it’s isolated to suggest that there’s something particularly malicious to it compared …

All objectifying fantasy is necessarily dehumanization, i don’t think I’m talking crazy when i say this one is highly elevated in feminist discourse as if this is not the nature of fantasy itself. Your example from the film seems more deconstructive of the trope, and that’s also just a very real way relationships collapse. Like what is the “ick” other than some confirmation that your partner is real and not your fantasy?
/r/PurplePillDebate03/04/26 02:56 PM

I get you’re very into your mental illness and all but this post is about how these fantasies function for people, i know everything you’re said we are working on a different level here

Can we just use some context clues for once and try to be thoughtful readers? Do you two really imagine i think this is about all men or all women? Like does every post here have to specify that or can we just engage with what the OP obviously means god damn lol

Spot on. Kinda like the dating apps, with social media we have this endless choice in socialization that we honestly shouldn’t have. Ironically turns us into antisocial, intolerant people. Yeah i think what you’re saying with hobbies is why we don’t have real subcultures anymore, just these cold online groupings around ‘aesthetics’ and stuff. Sad indeed

In principle I agree. What you’re describing is a reciprocal relationship, which are the kinds of relations we should make. However you can even look beyond romance to see the growing transactional character of relationships: when i lived in the UK, it was common to buy rounds of drinks for your friends. People so rarely do that in the US, everyone just gets their own usually. Transactional relationships are paranoid. Not that you really said this, but its not just the case that RP are creating …

It’s true as much as most forms of dissatisfaction under capitalism are intended to create anxious, unhappy consumers. The looksmaxx thing is where its most obvious—“buy all this crap and surgeries and you’ll be a desired person.” Obviously thats been imposed on women for a long time, men’s insecurity is just the new frontier.
/r/PurplePillDebate02/04/26 02:16 PM

Not that I’m Mr. Mature Adult, but I think it’s easy to see that the arrested development issue in the west is just getting worse, so there are manchildren everywhere. I mean all the rating out of 10 and looksmatch stuff is just not how grown ups talk, and I can only assume these men just don’t know how callous they sound to other people. Maybe there’s a lot of teenagers and such in these spaces too. On the other hand, the idea that woman have been spared this same social degeneration is laughab…

This just seems like an American outlook to me, that life is all about developing yourself as a brand and finding a tribe that is exactly like you. I think self-exploration is really not all its cracked up to be. I’m not sure our ‘selves’ are even real. I mean is that what dating’s about, just finding someone exactly like you? That seems to be what online dating suggests to us, but few of us are happy with that. What about romance, and the role of chance/fate? I’ll take the monoculture and all t…

Give it a rest
/r/PurplePillDebate29/03/26 05:00 PM

Yeah, and the way the “women’s intuition” thing is functioning there also kind of feeds into redpill narrative because toxic or bitter in that context usually just means undesirable. The abuse thing is tricky to talk about because in all likelihood these women were just taking these men in good faith which is not wrong —the abuser is wrong for what he does. But we can’t entertain this idea that abusers are master manipulators because they just aren’t, and in fact they’re usually very dumb people…

Probably true. Im in grad program that’s almost all women and these women (those that aren’t “lesbians”) just date and marry finance bros and shit, i feel like at the end of the day its just about money/status, you could be the most educated man ever but if its not obvious you have prospects then you’re still just another invisible person. The idea that ‘education’ is a value just seems like this nice cover story that makes it seem like they believe in anything at all (yea im bitter)

When it all comes down to it, its just the phones man. We are constantly subjecting ourselves to the opinions of men and women (if we can even verify they’re adults) who are not mature or smart enough to be able to share those views with so many people. And its tech and commodification of relationships that’s done this to the sexes in the first place but people dont seem as interested in talking about that as they are in chasing ghosts and rating people out of 10. Men and women in the west are d…

Aside from the uncomfortable observations about the character of western women, I really don’t find red pill ideas truthful. All the biology and evopsych talk means nothing to me and there’s all this cynicism and projection. Blue pill to me doesn’t really articulate anything beyond opposition to red pill, so im not really anti blue pill aside from the fact that I just don’t have a feminist outlook. As others have said here, there does seem to be this unexamined ‘women can do no wrong’ outlook th…

Huh
/r/PurplePillDebate20/03/26 03:31 PM

You can sort of track that from the emergence of ‘dating market’ as a thing that people say now. Our relationships are commodified now and people feel they can get a better ‘product’ than the one they have
/r/PurplePillDebate20/03/26 03:13 PM

Very true. Same for the ‘fear of STDs’ thing. We’re just kinda ashamed of our apprehension
/r/PurplePillDebate20/03/26 03:09 PM

I feel like ‘fair’ is the wrong place to start, though, because it’s the competitive nature of dating that is partially making people miserable. We certainly didn’t say things like ‘dating marketplace’ a decade ago. It doesn’t need to be ‘fair competition’, it needs to stop being competition and start being cooperative. Something we’re slowly losing is the role of the matchmaker or wingman. Our love lives are far more private than they used to be, and there’s no real social or symbolic order tha…
