This is correct: Moreover, in passing, it's interesting to note her phrasing: not "I (individual) don't like you," but "Nobody (social group) likes you." What she means and how she expresses that meaning will tell you quite a bit about female psychology. Or, to put it differently, how would a male (intending the same meaning as her) be an asshole to you? Does this contrast with how she was an asshole?

Here is George Leeman discussing bulking and cutting. The whole video is worth a watch, though admittedly it's long. For the beginning of his talk on bulking and cutting go to ~8:54. Leeman is an absolute beast, around your height (he's something like 6'3"). He's bulked up again to maximize his leverages in powerlifting, but there are pics out there (and in the linked video) of him leaning out. A bit in the linked video, and elsewhere, he's pretty transparent about the byproducts of leanness out…

Books are bullshit. Find a group of other men, particularly oldschool men, and do something with them. Join a club, sports team, drinking group, AA group, etc. Become a regular at a restaurant, bar, or gym. Speak to people, even if you sound bad. Don't let your obsession with being perfect / improving cripple you from putting yourself out there. Most young guys these days are almost as terrified of looking stupid/ignorant/weak in front of male strangers as they are of looking stupid/ignorant/wea…

Stay in or go out: Stay in: read, meditate, play in the backyard with my dogs, fuck my wife, study, lift in my garage gym, barbecue, shit around online and find sales leads for my job, smoke my pipe or a cigar, etc. Go out: go to a diner/coffee shop and people-watch. Friday night Magic (The Gathering -- I don't play but I like watching/socializing). Accessory work at the local gym since I only have a power rack and deadlift platform in my garage. Take my dog for a walk. Go to an AA meeting (this…

I come into regular contact with twenty somethings and so I'm looking for advice on improving my conversational skills during this period. Are you a twenty something as well? If so, you'll have the most success with body language and visuals. Facial aesthetics are largely genetic, but you can cheat a bit with weight-management, facial hair, and regular maintenance. Put together a descent wardrobe. Learn what confident body language looks like (there's a difference between confident and agressive…

People may be in my life proportionally to the value they add to it. This. Think of who you chose to associate with as a spectrum, rather than binary (Friend vs. not-Friend). For instance, I have my close family -> close friends -> other friends/family -> business associates -> vague acquaintances for hobbies -> etc. etc. I move them further to me vs. away from me based on how they positively or negatively influence my life. Hell, my scale may actually be a little off because I sometimes purpose…

I have a few that have helped me, though this list is not exhaustive. Excuse my formatting, I'm on mobile: Starting Strength, by Mark Rippetoe Autobiography of Teddy Roosevelt Sun and Steel, by Yukio Mishima Starship Troopers, by Robert A. Heinlein Zen Mind, Beginner's Mind, by Shunryū Suzuki Religion and Nothingness, by Keiji Nishitani (this one is difficult to grasp). The Self-Overcoming of Nihilism, Ibid. (Read this before Nishitani's other one.) The Open Society and Its Enemies, by Karl Popp…

Why are you debating this? Just to save ~$30 - ~$60 a month? Ask yourself: 1) What are your fitness goals? (Sidebar: what kind of machine is available? Some machines are relatively worthless, others approach free weights in terms of optimal Gainz potential for beginning lifters. Though, on second thought, if it's between machines and nothing I would start with the machine and see how your body responds: just do something) 2)What are your priorities? Are you ok with "less than optimal" Gainz? 3) …

I'd recommend reading Teddy Roosevelt's autobiography. Pretty good stuff about being a man but being "progressive" (trust busting, giving the average man a "square deal", etc.). I'm also biased toward this sort of thinking, given that my grandfather was a foreman at a steel mill and a union man for many years.

Bill Burr did a pretty good bit related to this when he was on a Conan last year. The audience's reaction is just as interesting to me as what Bill is saying.

Totally! I've also seen it referenced as sentience vs. "sapience"; e.g., a dog is self-aware, in that it can differentiate itself from others, but it is not able (as far as we can measure) to be aware that it is aware of having a self. Sapience is a sort of meta-cognitive awareness that allows us to, within our absolute physical constraints (genetics, laws of physics, etc.), make rational choices of how we want to move forward in life. This is pretty useful when manning up and making something o…

Reason versus impulses. In Chan Buddhism they call it something like "the monkey-mind", much in the same way that we speak of a "monkey on my back". Contrast this with your will, where the will can observe the thoughts put forward by the (seemingly) uncontrollable monkey-mind, giving perspective that you are not only these seemingly uncontrollable thoughts, but rather the totality of the whole process. This is to say, the ability to go against our momentary impulses/desires is a product of culti…

“Why should I fear death? If I am, then death is not. If Death is, then I am not. Why should I fear that which can only exist when I do not?" ― Epicurus And, from a more contemporary source: "God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, The courage to change the things I can, And the wisdom to know the difference."

See Aristotle's account of eudaimonia in the Nicomachean Ethics, where happiness (as opposed to mere pleasure) is a function of habitual activities in accordance with arête, or excellence. Happiness-as-pleasure is fleeting (a point that I see glossed over sometimes in the sub), but eudaimonia takes time, discipline, and most of all you and your commitment to making a better life for yourself, rather than finding it "out in the world" somewhere.

Pain, I came to feel, might well prove to be the sole proof of the persistence of consciousness within the flesh, the sole physical expression of consciousness . . . Men have by now forgotten the profound hidden struggle between consciousness and the body that exists in courage, and physical courage in particular. Sun & Steel, Yukio Mishima

Join social clubs and/or find mentors. Most college grads are going to be in the 21-24 age range, which is definitely still young. Mentors will provide for you socially, educate you about the "real world", and help with job prospects (etc.).

TL;DR: Monks are different than hermits. Even monks have mentors and other monks to lean upon. I went through a Monk Mode period when I sobered up earlier this year. I went from managing a successful pub, drinking and mingling with new people every night in a rich, artsy area of one of the largest cities in the US, to sitting in my house unemployed but choosing to better myself as best I could rather than masturbate and play video games. You can learn almost anything from the internet, but it's …
