IMO, I know is not a popular name around here, but the book by Dr Peterson "12 Rules for life" helped me a lot as an entrance point to fix myself, I would definitely start with the diet/exercise routines, but as well I highly recommend lecture to understand HOW you got fucked up so you can fix yourself . The book, helped to explore more ways to help and improve myself when I was most depressed/anxious 2 years ago. The process is slow but meaningful, you can do it, one day at the time. Good luck.

Weak men makes frustrated women and frustrated women makes weak men, the more I listen to my mothers life, the more I would hate my father as a man if he had the stupid idea of marrying her. Its tough, I am constantly wondering how I didn't become a male feminist or gay when I hated myself so much for been a man after listening to my mothers bullshit during years. I made peace with both my mom and dad, but still... damn.

I am a JBP fan and I agree with all you just said, the doc "helped me" when I was in a sort of dark corner until last year, when I started to watch his lectures. I still working on "sorting myselft" to help my family without creating a bigger mess than the one I was raised on. So just to simple disregard his commentary on an oversimplification as "to serve others" as OP said is wrong. The goal is to better yourself and then try to help the family/community as much as you can while you keep yours…
