 ok. The women's rights movement dates back to at least the 1790s, but sequential or simultaneous, the point stands. I don't see the civil rights movement dictating what real black people are "allowed" or "supposed" to do, for example - not on the same systemic and unopposed scale. What I really want to ask feminism (as if it was some monolithic organization - ha!) is, you are not willing to accept limitations, restrictions, and rules from "men", "the patriarchy", or whoever the perceived…

The problem seems to be that feminism, like any racial discrimination fight, started out by fighting systemic problems. Women were not permitted by society to do some things. I think we all agree that needed to change - and has changed. There is little that women are forbidden to do these days, in the western world at least. The problem is that once they had mostly solved the society-wide, systemic problems, feminism did not go away - it decided to reinvent itself as the arbiter of every individ…

Have you tried posting to the parenting subs? /r/daddit, /r/parenting, etc? Most of the folks on there are parents, some are dad-specific, and you might get some more targeted answers than here in Men's Rights, where we tend to be concerned with families from the divorce, child support, and fairness angles.

in 1918, there were pretty rigid gender roles for both men and women. Taken in historical context, this is no different than any of these vintage advertisements - funny given our modern perspective, but nothing out the ordinary for their time. I prefer to look at most of these as evidence of how far we've come, rather than trying to apply 2015 social morality to a 100-year-old piece of propaganda.

Depending on how you define "gentleman", this isn't a bad idea. Historically, "gentleman" =/= "gentle man". It had much more to do with being able to lead, knowing how to behave socially, and knowing when a gentle touch was required, and when you needed to challenge some asshole to fight to the death.

Ok guys, many apologies for this one. I skimmed the first few paragraphs, posted it, and just finished reading. It starts off with real promise, and then he goes downhill. The sorority-only party idea in particular is repulsive.

For the first time, I think I can say "check your privilege" non-ironically. Check out the rights and privileges you have before you go bitching about the ones you perceive to be lacking.

Emphasis on had clubs. Here in the US it's gyms. All gyms must be either co-ed, or women-only. There was a story posted here a few days ago about a guy who's got a chain of men-only barbershops, and there was some predictable bitching in the comments about how sexist he was.

I am so very confused. Is she saying that real men should protect women who are traveling at night, or that girls who are traveling at night shouldn't need protection because no real man would bother her? There are so many problems with either statement that I just literally can't even. /s

The problem I see with the legal definition of assault is that assault is separated from not assault by the victim's perception. The "victim" gets to decide whether s/he feels threatened by what other people do or say, and if s/he does, it's assault. The intent of the person who "assaults" her has nothing to do with it. The reason this is a problem is that there's currently a concerted societal movement towards zero-tolerance, rendering the "reasonable" portion of the legal definition void, as i…

I'm heavily involved in junior roller derby, a full contact sport played by both genders. We've recently (in the last few months) had to make single-gender play avaliable, after holding a co-ed championship tournament in 2014. Want to guess what group of people caused the change? Not the kids playing - but the fathers of female players, who were convinced that teenage boys and girls couldn't play together on the track without their daughter being hurt or securely assaulted. We need to police the…

This author is right - the guy on her porch was wrong to not leave when asked to leave. The problem is when this trespassing is made about gender. The gender of the participants don't matter except in the author's mind - and in the minds, now, of her audience. The guy on her porch could have been a girl who was larger/stronger than her. Or who was armed. The author could have been a guy. Doesn't matter. The problem in any of these cases is the balance of power. If the author had asserted herself…

I wouldn't. If you only have her 4 days out of the month, your ex will have grounds to go back to court and petition for an adjustment of child support - and you won't come out of that very happy. It does sound crowded. Is there any way to flex things for sleeping - maybe put the youngest in a different space short-term, while trying to find a slightly bigger place? A little more rent is far preferable to paying child support through the nose in my book.

The problem with the concept is that it's fighting one blanket statement based on gender with another. I don't like the idea of perpetrating one of the mistaken facts that is so often used to beat down men - that we make more money than women. That's why the sarcasm tags.

The author is making a great point: the problem is not with the celebrity preferring a certain type of female; the problem is that the offended women are so insecure that they take his preference as a personal affront. A more secure person might let his definition of his ideal woman role off their shoulders and move on with finding a normal human - one who doesn't hold their imperfections against them because s/he's not perfect either. Part of the problem may also be that many of these girls get…

Why is it anyone's business how i pee? If I can take a leak standing on my head, that's a skill I can hone on my own time, in any bathroom I care to use. Even banning urinals can't force anyone to pee a certain way - I can stand and piss into a toilet as easily as into a urinal (although I have to aim more carefully). I think this one belongs in /r/WTF.

Not hardly - but I think that in an economy where you have an oversupply of girls, men are going to be much more selective, and women are going to compete for guys they wouldn't even look at if the ratio was different. A 8-9 girl may settle for a 5-6 guy, for example. Also, girls aren't just sleeping with one guy either - so even of you hook up with a different chick daily, chances are at least some of those women are doing the same thing, which equalizes the math somewhat.

I think these stats may be related. After all, if 60% of undergrads are women, and 40% are men, then about 20% of the women are getting sexually rejected - there just aren't enough collage-educated guys to go around.

Didn't I see an article the other day about a (female) professor wishing she could only teach (classic) female authors, but that there just weren't enough classic female authors to make that feasible? I seem to recall she got a lot of sympathy about her plight. Amazing how different it gets when genders are reversed :-(

This is a very western viewpoint. According to Mara Hvistendahl in her 2011 popular science book Unnatural Selection: Choosing Boys Over Girls, and the Consequences of a World Full of Men, in most developed countries, especially Asian/eastern countries, the emphasis is on having at least one male child - largely for reasons of culture and inheritance. She says that in those countries, the sex ratio of first children tends to be biologically normal and balanced - but the sex ratio of second birth…

It was going so well... and then the last sentence was added. A strong man is not threatened by a strong woman - but anyone who has "an attitude" is, in my experience, compensating for something. Typically, being a little bitch.

I think the term you're looking for might be "egalitarian" or, possibly, "humanist" - in that you believe in equality. There was a really great post on this topic over in Change My View a couple of days ago - this reply by /u/Kode47 to /u/NeuroticIntrovert's response.

In the state of New Mexico, the law is that the difference between incomes and the difference between custodial time are balanced - so if the father makes 165k and the mom makes 160k, he makes 50.77% of the combined income and she makes 49.33%. So if they have a 50/50 split, he would owe her .77% of the child support (there's a schedule for how much support is due on one, two, or more kids for various incomes). Also, his contribution to the healthcare and schooling should also be taken into acco…
