In the UK the legal definition of rape is penetrative sex without consent. Said no, it's rape. Unconscious, it's rape. Underage and so not considered to have capacity to consent, it's rape. Too drunk to have capacity to consent, it's rape. A lot of this is abusive but not technically rape. Consent requires capacity AND a realistic ability to say no. Being pressured, harassed, or groomed could go far enough to make it non-consensual, but that would be case dependent. IMO a yes is yes and nothing …

Only one small comment. I saw someone on here previously talk about lack of abuse shelters. I raised it with a county councillor (UK regional government) and they went and checked. In that county there are services for men escaping DV but they are infrequently used. Can’t comment on why that is, I was just glad they are there.

Can I ask what country you’re speaking about?

Can't answer all of this but... In terms of language you're talking about theories of linguistic construction of reality. Broadly, the words we use shape our reality, so the theory would be that using derogatory language changes your psychological perspective and your actions. There is a fair bit of research backing this up. Make of that what you will. I don't think you can say all of any group as big as 'women' or 'men' have experienced anything. There's certainly evidence of high rates of girl…

What country are you in? Different laws will make a big difference to what needs to be done.

I'm just going to hand over to the Samaritans. For anyone not familiar with them they are one of the world's leading suicide prevention organisations. Hopefully they'll make it clearer than I have: https://www.samaritans.org/about-samaritans/research-policy/gender-and-suicide/

Yes there is. It's called sampling bias. Take a totally different example: 50% of the shoppers you talk to own a pair of Dr Martens. You expect this because you are standing in the Dr Marten shop. You wouldn't expect to get the same result if you interviewed everyone who made any purchase within every shop in a 3 mile radius. Why? Because if someone is in the DM shop they already like DMs. They've gone in there for a reason. Most other shoppers haven't. The same is true of this case. The people …

Hi. I work with the National Suicide Prevention Alliance and can actually answer this accurately. I think what's confusing here is the difference between experiencing suicidality and completing suicide. Men are more likely to die by suicide. That is indisputable. However, the reasons for that are not because they experience more suicidality as a lot of people think. The evidence says it's because of things like access to lethal means, chances of interruptions, differences in help seeking behavio…

As the article says, people are only getting the tests because they are unsure in the first place. You would expect there to be a high number of cases where men are not the father in this situation. There's no reason to think these would be the numbers in the general population.

You're welcome. It's a good OP that really got me thinking. I'm sorry it feels so total. I hope you eventually experience something else.

Firstly, I'm sorry your experiences have been treated disrespectfully. No-one should be made to feel that being subjected to violence is not worth correcting or preventing. IMO this really depends on your environment. I've come across people who passionately work against violence towards and among males, fight it being dismissed, and put huge efforts into supporting male victims of violence of any kind, but I've also come across those who think even small boys being beaten is fine because it tou…

The definition of rape is penetration with a penis, which means a woman by definition can't commit rape. The crime the other way is called 'forced to penetrate' and, in the UK, has even less success with prosecutions than rape does, though it is also rarer.

Entirely fair point. I can think of legitimate arguments for it but I've always been dubious about positive discrimination in any form - putting the word 'positive' before something that would otherwise be a crime doesn't actually make it good. The problem for me is that most inequalities are established long before people reach a workplace. This kind of tactic is a sticking plaster rather than a cure.

I would have to check but I think it's because men are more likely to be doctors than nurses and being a doctor pays more anyway. That certainly used to be the case in the UK and I think it still stands.

Sorry, not sure what you're unhappy about. This man is being honest about his emotions (great), using his connection to and responsibility to his daughter to keep going (human connection like this is proven to reduce suicide risk), and is being supported by others for both. Parents going through mental health issues have a difficult line to tread, balancing parenting with self-care. Hopefully this guy is being supported elsewhere but that's not the point he's making. He wants to be a good father…

I don't agree with that. This is poor and I know plenty of Feminists who would totally reject it. Let's not tarnish everyone with the same brush.

The depiction & treatment of men as second class parents is infuriating, as is the assumption that all women are natural mothers. Outdated nonsense.

The next section says this though: While boys are overrepresented in detention, girls often suffer gender-based discrimination. Research conducted for the study shows that girls are more likely to be arrested for status offences, for behaviour rather than actual criminal activity, including sexual activity, truancy and running away from home. Girls living on the streets are particularly vulnerable, as they are often arrested for prostitution. If States criminalize abortion, girls risk incarcerat…

In the UK the definition of rape is a penetrative sexual assault in vagina or anus with a penis. By that definition, no a woman can't rape. The nearest sexual assault f on m is forced to penetrate, which is not nearly well known enough or truly recognised as a comparable assault.

If this is your attitude to the women around you it's no wonder you are having crap experiences. You are basically blaming all women for the problems in your life. If I said the same about men you would (quite rightly) hit the roof. You're saying women get it so much better but when I, as a woman, tell you you're missing things you just tell me I'm wrong. It's no wonder you feel like there's a huge gap between the experiences of men and women! You seem to have this idea of what an idealised life…

I'm sorry you feel like this. As a woman I think you're seriously overestimating how good a time we have. Relationships can be hard on everyone, we too have huge pressure on us to be good in bed, childbirth is a leading cause of PTSD (which is often not recognised or treated)... What I find awful in what you're saying is that you feel like you don't receive any support and that you feel all these pressures to be impossibly perfect. I hate the fact that anyone is made to feel like that. I'll say …

Actually, at it's core it is. Obviously there are idiots who take it down a vile route but the principle is that equality will be attained by empowering women/females/the feminine. So, 'real men don't cry' comes from the idea that crying is 'female' and a 'real man' shouldn't stoop to a female level. To change it you raise the status of being female/feminine/a woman so it can no longer be used in a derogatory way.

Interesting, I didn't read it like that at all. It seemed to me to be stressing that men have a higher suicide rate all round but trying not to ignore the female rates. If you are wandering males commit more suicide at all age groups, including 10. I know. Suicide rates for men are a huge concern for anyone engaged in national mental health discussions (which I am). Plus, the NOS table shows that quite clearly: https://www.ons.gov.uk/peoplepopulationandcommunity/birthsdeathsandmarriages/deaths/d…

There is so much in that article that is disturbing starting with the fact that the young person age range begins at 10... Fingers crossed that they're right about it being a change of categorisation more than an actual increase in number of suicides.

I'm seeing lots of posts on here from the Daily Mail. You all know that newspaper is considered so misleading even Wikipedia won't allow it to be used as a source right?

I agree that it's an inappropriate joke but I don't think that's hatred of men any more than jokes about women spending hours shopping is hatred of women.

Violence isn't acceptable whoever's doing it. With you being so much bigger than them it's a good idea to avoid physically assaulting them if you can, not because you shouldn't defend yourself but because you might be surprised by just how much damage you can do (as a former f kickboxer who used to spar against men much bigger than me the reality of just how far they could knock me caught us all off guard more than once). You're 14 and this is happening in school. IMO it's the job of the teacher…

I stress this to my male friends all the time. The social constructs that prevent men from expressing themselves in healthy ways is literally lethal. I do a lot of work around mental health and, since I've increased how vocal I am about it, I've had a number of men contacting me privately to have conversations they just don't feel they can have with anyone else. It will never stop making me angry that so many men feel they just don't have anywhere to turn when they are overwhelmed or in crisis.

I've always thought positive discrimination was problematic. There are the odd jobs here and there where gender might be relevant (for example, if you're working in a safe house for vulnerable women/men) but otherwise it causes as many problems as it solves.

I would have to check but I think that's because of the increased risk of life-threatening injury in violence m to f rather than visa versa. However, there's no excuse for not having a single place a father can take his children.
