They perceive everyone as a threat and are looking for reasons to escalate a situation. You would have been in cuffs before you even were able to say one word to the cop. OP, what you did by refusing to speak with the officer(s) outside of the presence of a lawyer was 100% the best possible option. I am an attorney in NJ and have seen multiple instances where the officers have used certain comments made in an interview out of context to support an indictment.
