Man, I really wish I could find the old article from like 2015 or 2016 it showed it really well with bar graphs side by side comparing the top 50 salaries between men and women in US soccer. For the first 10 or so athletes the gradient in pay as you went down the list it was comparable but after that it was such a sharp drop-off for the women the contrast was extremely noticeable. I know for soccer the top paid male and female athletes actually aren't too different from each other in annual income, but if you start going down the list you'll see the female pay goes down fast. If you're a male player who rarely plays and are largely just a substitute player, you'll still be raking in a couple hundred thousand a year and whereas a female player of the same status may only make 50-60k annually.
