Because it creates a more accepting enviroment. If a small girl sees that a lot of women work with engineering she might consider it an option for her future, and who knows? She might find out that this is what she wants to spend her life doing. That wouldn't happen (or at least be less likely to happen) if more women weren't participating in the field. No it's not. When smaller competitions for male synchronized swimming show up then the quality of the competition will rise. A big and prestigious competition like the Olympic Games can't afford to host small sports like that. Otherwise they would have to include thousands of different niché sports that has terrible competition and no audience. I agree that you have to start somewhere, the olympics however is not the place.
