Some people will think you're creepy just for talking to anyone you don't know. Just be polite, and if they make it obvious they don't want to be talking, or talking to you, then move on.

The first thing you mention is a big part of it, overcoming the fear and realizing that it can actually be fun. That will change the focus from, "God I'm going to make a fool of myself tonight" to "I might have a ton of fun making a fool of myself tonight."
