Asking myself what I did to put myself in that abusive relationship and tolerate it for all those years. Everybody in my life thought she treated me like shit but they never brought it up because they thought I seemed happy enough. They assumed that I had a handle on the situation. We were talking about getting married and it all just kind of clicked 😬 She had to go. I didn't really realize the lesson I learned until a few years of being single and ruminating after that experience.

Ever heard of the idiom "putting a woman in her place?" Yeah, it doesn't mean beat her. If you do that, you're an evil piece of shit. It means set your boundaries and stick by them. If you say you don't play games, don't play games. If she ain't it, she ain't worth shit and you can just leave. Y'all can be buddies or whatever, but if someone wants to be your partner you've gotta respect yourself enough to tell someone to cut the shit because it's not worth anybody's time, even the drama queen's.

Got out of an abusive relationship 6 years ago, which was my only one, and honestly the thought of having to go through that again is just fucked. I do yearn for affection, I'm just honestly kind of freaked out at the prospect so I just don't try. Not sure if I ever will, because honestly I've never seen the good side of a relationship outside of movies. It is what it is.

Being considered as a rapist or SAer or creep when you yourself are a survivor of rape. It only needs to happen once, and it's crippling. I think that'd put a lot of the discourse in question in perspective.

Part of stoicism is choosing your battles. From what I hear the Barbie movie isn't even that bad, but "the freaks come out at night." I can almost guarantee you that the Barbie movie is far less toxic as a whole than the discourse surrounding it, which of course serves as free advertisement for the movie. Don't feel guilty for who you are. Nobody can put you in a box but you. Your identity and personal life choices have nothing to do with what other people say at the end of the day. It can if yo…

Not having casual sex is just as valid of a way to express your sexuality as sleeping around. Your body count doesn't determine your worth, some men & women have a preference, and that's okay, but other people's preference has nothing to do with your worth, as a man or otherwise.

OP you're asking an aggrieved space what to do about your sister being a Feminist. You're not gonna get healthy answers. She's your sister first and foremost. Try talking to her about how men are specifically targeted in certain ways, JUST LIKE WOMEN ARE, and that it's important to recognize ALL of these issues for both men and women. Then maybe have a frank conversation about how, while Feminism started out great and is still great on paper, certain spaces will still breed an irrational hatred …

That being said, your primary motivator CANNOT be women. Finding the one is a symptom of a life well lived, not a goal. If you see it as a goal, you'll be let down by female douchebags. If you see it as a symptom, you'll sift through the bullshit to find the one right for you. Sane women do the same shit, and there are a lot more sane women out there then Reddit would like you to think.

The marriage laws are less shit than the process through which bias is evoked. On paper, the marriage laws are just fine. In practice--- well I've met plenty of men who've had their lives ruined on their ex's whim. A good woman is a symptom of a good life lived as a man. A symptom. Not a goal, and certainly not a guarantee. That's pretty much the crux of what I said. If she feels like she deserves alimony and the sole child custody, what rationality can make her go back on it? Feeling as if you …

It's because it's easy to harbor a resentment towards women. A good woman is a symptom of a good life lived as a man. Pendulums. I'm drunk so I'll just say it again. Pendulums. Be the bigger person decades down the line and remind the little ones that awful women were celebrated. The pendulum is swinging back now, but only awful men are being celebrated (Tate). Speak up. Prevent the world from becoming anybody's world, not just men's or women's.

You're right. Ultimately what we consider masculine & feminine derive from historical & biological observations little more legitimate than stereotypes in the modern age. At the end of the day, we're really just talking about virtues. Men have an inclination towards some, while women others, with very many shared inclinations in between.
/r/MensRights25/01/23 01:41 AM
3

Well there are virtues to masculine lines of thinking & feminine lines of thinking. One can and should practice both while recognizing our strengths--- of course taking care to not be absolutist in our mindset. For example, as a man, my natural inclination towards stoicism and temperance doesn't really mean much if I'm not utilizing it to nurture and support those around me.

Well I got the year wrong in passing, but look at title VII of the 1964 Civil Rights Act. (a) Employer practices: "It shall be an unlawful employment practice for an employer - (1) to fail or refuse to hire or to discharge any individual, or otherwise to discriminate against any individual with respect to his compensation, terms, conditions, or privileges of employment, because of such individual's race, color, religion, sex, or national origin; or (2) to limit, segregate, or classify his employ…

Your average man is far from ideal as well. Selfishness is the root of most abuse I would say, and that trait knows no sex. I wouldn't call nurturing behavior "man-like," considering thousands of years of historical context. It's not beneath a man, much like stoicism is not beneath a woman. On the violent criminal portion, men know how to guide men. Unfortunately, men make up a disproportionate amount of violent criminals at a larger scale. It is abuse of the weak, and given that at least half o…

Interesting perspective. It sounds like your mom experienced some bad women herself. I would not say that masculinity is akin to being good honestly. Masculinity when tempered is a good thing, stoicism, logical thinking, and all the things you mentioned. Those traits can be used as much for bad as they can for good. The stoic man can shrug off abuse. The logical man can press a button to kill off a massive portion of the population. The same can be said for femininity, take nurturing for example…

The power + prejudice lie is probably the most malicious thing to ever come out of Universities. You pay out the ass for loans, therefore you're subject to a sunk loss fallacy, as well as the appeal to authority mentioned earlier. At that point in your life, you are much more susceptible to accepting whatever worldview is fed to you, as long as it appears "academic." That's why I call it a cult. Coupled with threat of ostracization, separated from those you've known and loved, it ticks all of th…

It's a cult that originated in America & proceeded to metastasize their ideas through once respected institutions. Those who resist are met with appeals to authority. Long story short, folks here have gotten apathetic & didn't believe it neccessary to hold established institutions to account. This is changing, albeit slowly. Most normies are content until the cult reaches their career or their front door. I attended a mandatory seminar on racism at CWU freshman orientation. Sure, no problem. Tha…

I think you're conflating a breaking down of discriminatory barriers with the meeting of artificial quotas based on uncontrolled traits. Affirmative action is the latter. Do you think it's moral, immoral, or something in between? Personally I believe it flies in the face of the Civil Rights Act of 1969.

What we're seeing is a sort of reverse of the "man's world," of the 50's structuring of society due to cultural shift. It's easy to see the rash entitlement sold to an entire generation of women & attribute those macro-factors to the individual. That doesn't make it any less of a brain-sink of a trap. A hateful mindset does nothing for progress. I don't blame anybody for falling into that mindset, though I do commend anybody who rises above it. That requires no small amount of grace.

Maybe add something like "... and if anybody who holds a position of power over you tries to silence you, be very wary. Due to the power dynamics presence, it's also important to stand up for people being silenced. A talk with the students about free expression & their responsibility to utilize it. I'd teach them to always ask questions. If questions aren't allowed to be asked, it's important to always ask more, because any idea gone unchallenged is an idea not worth internalizing. Somebody telling a woman not to speak is attacking their agency, and that is not okay. The right for people to go through life with comfort knowing that prejudice is against the social norm. Here's a copypasta I made that I've been dropping around the web in an attempt to weaken the identitarian elements of modern Feminism. Unfortunately, the written doctrine of an ideaology is the first step in defining the culture that forms around that ideaology. However, there is a difference. The MRM is not exclusive in nature, as was feminism. It is made up of both men and women (women being some of its strongest leaders). It was women themselves that have been instrumental in launching the MRM, it is the "honey badgers" who are hosting this years international conference on men's issues. Feminism rose in power by defending women from abusive husbands in an archaic divorce system. It eventually warped into the toxic ideaology we see today due to it's identitarian elements that rely on immutable chatacteristics. It is akin to saying that if we ban the neo-nazi movement, we must ban jews that oppose it This is a false equivalency. I am not saying we should ban men. The type of feminism discussed here is rooted in identity politics & suffers from a victim\oppressor mentality. A far cry from the nobler feminists of the 20th century. Could you please explain how one would be socially libertarian vs. authoritarian? Never heard this distinction myself.

Thanks for expanding my perspective, but I don't believe the existence of anarcho-communism invalidates many of the points she's making. Just because the Left tends to be more authoritarian in patten & practice doesn't mean there aren't exceptions.

Here's a decent video on the validity of horseshoe theory. Basically authoritarianism (pure Left) looks very similar to anarchy (pure Right) when you consider that both outcomes can involve a centralized power exercising force over others. The difference being that under anarchy, might makes right--- not the social dogma. Both political extremes are harmful to our civilized Western society and can invoke similar issues; but it is important to recognize the difference between the two imho.

I upvoted that post because it's absurdity made me chuckle while still being poignant about perceived hypocrisy. I believe it's safe to say I'm not the only one who did for the same reason. I'm not gonna stop visiting a sub just because someone else doesn't agree with how one should conduct themselves in the world.

Definitely a false equivalency. I think it was a joke, though.

Identitarian bullshit. If we're going to talk about white privilege, why don't we talk about the privilege granted to POC: where they get to respond to racism with racism without incurring the wrath of the court of public opinion? Identitarianism > tribalism > ostracizing rhetoric > extreme tribes > violent extremist individuals > identitarians point to the violent extremist in their opposition's ranks while vomiting their talking points in an attempt to recruit.

No, toxic masculinity is when you get nineteen of your other dad friends over to cook for two young boys. relevant.

Maybe I'm too optimistic, but I really hope that one day everyone can look at each other, and we see everyone as just another person, not by their gender or race. No bias for getting a job based on meeting gender or race quotas, or likelihood of getting custody of your children in divorce court, or even just how good of a driver they are. Goddamn I hope someone's grandkids will be able to live in that world.

Exactly. Well adjusted adults (i.e. the 'good men') tend to respond to positive reinforcement and have an aversion to negative reinforcement. Negative reinforcement only works if the person in question is unable/unwilling to leave the situation; like a child being scolded or a worker being goaded. I would argue that any positive change you see from negative reinforcement would be outweighed by the negative impacts on the future social engagements and mental health of those affected. This is one …

I genuinely appreciate that you came to such a space with an open mind --- even though this sub can get a little carried away with the women generalizations sometimes. Which is a bad habit on this sub's part imo. I'm guilty of upvoting a generalization or two myself because it appealed to my frustration. It's like catharsis, but it creates a soft bigotry against women and I won't participate in it anymore. (╯°□°)╯︵ (upvote)

Gotta say, TERFs are more right wing than your average redditor thinks. Not to associate them with any sane conservative (or sane liberal for that matter WHAAAAT_BOTH_EXIST?? ), but they are against sex work, and their rhetoric mirrors homophobic rhetoric from the past.
