Honestly sad. It feels like we’re fighting war and the question at hand is do we stay and fight? Or do we leave? Can’t really blame anyone for their choice. It doesn’t feel hyperbolic at all to call this a war.

But the core values of a good HVM in the past and today are also the core values of a good middle class man, are they not? No. Being middle class is not even close to enough. LVM are prevalent in all classes. In fact, many men with higher income seem to act even more entitled and view women as commodities (see Leonardo DiCaprio, etc). Obviously the way people are raised can have a huge impact the way they treat others and how successful they are, but income and class is not even close to the det…

Thanks for getting this discussion started. As someone who’s dealt with two(!) stalkers in the past, personally being strong didn’t seem to deter them. I’m a tall, very athletic woman, but they didn’t care. I've also dealt with a ton of harassment and assault. It still definitely helps with confidence though, which is something Gavin de Becker highlighted as important. You have to walk like you’re ready, alert, and situationally aware. More importantly, Lock down your internet presence. Don’t le…

Oh interesting- just wrote something similar! Completely agree, although at this point I’m not even worried about falling back into old ways… I just don’t see it as something worth my time and it’s impossible for me to overlook the slight incompatibilities… I can still go on all the adventures and cool dinners I want, but if a man wants the presence of my time and energy he’s going to have to bring more to the table than the ability to pay the bill. I’ll gladly go solo before I do that again. Su…

From the last episode on rotational dating, I realized the term "scrotation roster" just completely turned me off from the idea of multi-dating. If scrote = dickhead, I absolutely don't want to date a roster full of them. I'm not interested in dating even *one*. It's gotta be men who have good characters and their shit together or it's a no from me. Dating and just having fun with men while they're on there best behavior can lead to you getting attached, even when multi-dating. And if you don't …

Glad you’re here sis. Even though I make more than most men my age, I still think 50/50 is unfair. First of all, I worked my ass off to succeed in a male dominated industry. Second, the stakes are much higher for us. They might pay for a dinner, but so what? We have so much more to lose.

I agree completely! My dad is abusive to my mom and she’s very much under his control. Recently he’s extended this to my little sister and her pushing back against it has caused huge war in my family. Everyone wants her to just do what he says to “keep the peace” and they’re so mad at her for pushing back, when it will hurt her and benefit him. It’s so infuriating and heartbreaking that my mom and older sister stand by him, but it makes sense. They tolerate bad behavior from their partners all t…

I also cut a guy from my roster after finding out he’s an antivaxxer! It’s so disappointing and revealing, but so frustrating because of how completely illogical it is. Unfortunately for him, I value intelligence and empathy in a partner… I’m glad we at least found out early on.

Same sis. I'm sorry you've dealt with the same. It's dangerous out there. I try to avoid meeting guys in bars in general, but it does unfortunately seem like one of the most common places to meet men. I try to either avoid men in bars in general or at least not later in the evening.

Interesting... Giving out a Facebook profile can be dangerous too though depending on how diligent you are with protecting your info on there. I've heard of people using a google voice number as a precaution, but it's not something I've tried yet. Ideally, I'd be able to trust my intuition enough to just avoid giving my info to the wrong people, but I've had some bad experiences in the past. Either way, I guess that's what the block and delete part is about right? And that's true! It sounds like…

I’d say start out with pursuing hobbies that you’re interested in that are more social in nature. I like to go places I would imagine myself going to with a future HVM, but the key is it has to be something you’re interested in. An example from my life is regularly attending yoga classes or sand volleyball. It’s a great way to meet people and have fun in general. If I was playing sand volleyball solely to meet guys I would’ve given up by now, but bc I’m having fun it’s okay that I don’t end up w…

The discouragement from dealing with it in person is just as real. Last week a man yelled in my face that I was stuck up because I didn’t want to talk to him. :/ and this isn’t even someone I was remotely attracted to.

Good list! Do you go to meetups alone? I’m too selfish with my energy and when I take myself out to eat, I honestly don’t want to be interrupted. I play a coed sport, joined some running groups, go dancing, go to karaoke night, frequent nice coffee shops, and go to various gyms (think yoga studios, rock climbing, etc). Not to mention, I attend every social event I’m invited to. I go out to breweries with friends too, but honestly don’t even look to meet men there… breweries and bars are full of …

Wow, that’s frustrating. Good for you for following your instincts. Were you working with a matchmaker too? Did you meet any matches? I’m not on OLD, but I don’t know if it’s possible to fully apply the strategies and multi-date without it. I’m constantly in positions where I meet men because of my friends and hobbies, but I’m pretty quick to eliminate and rule them out now thanks to the handbook. I’m grateful for it, but the elimination often comes before a date (or getting asked out) does. Further, block and delete is more awkward to apply when you meet through mutual friends or at events because I end up crossing paths with…

I guess I just don’t get it... is the punchline that... he’s not using her? Or that he’s obviously using her? Or that it’s typical of him to use? I know a lot of people like Bo Burnham, so maybe it’s just that I don’t get his humor.

She was definitely not a role model, but this scene in particular was one of the few times I loved what she had to say. She had two losers fighter over her who had done her wrong and she said no. Imagine a world where weak women didn't exist. Okay, but hear me out... imagine a world where weak men didn't exist... Men couldn't just run to a weak woman after a strong woman required more than the bare minimum. If a man's running anywhere because a strong woman requires more than a bare minimum, he's doing that strong woman a favor. If he's not capable AND willing to give more the bare minimum, he's not even a consideration. If you require time, emotion, respect, honesty and your man can…

Imagine a world where weak women didn't exist... Nah sis. Society conditions us since childhood to do all we can to be accepted and fit into the standards set by men. Society grooms us to be Pickmeishas and the subset of us here on FDS pushing back against this narrative are demonized by the media and viewed as a threat. Imagine a world where low value men didn't exist.

Agreed, but I’m so confused by your edit... Lavish can be used as a verb or an adjective, not a noun. So lavishing is a real word. Also, conjugation is applied to verbs, not nouns. Maybe in another language what you’re saying makes more sense?

Glad he’s on the way out! But if you’re reflecting, who are you wearing it for? I used to say I was wearing it for myself, but the longer answer I realized was that I was wearing it to feel good about myself and that feeling was slightly dependent on how other people would see me. Considering beauty standards are patriarchal, it was upsetting to realize that I was trying to look prettier as defined by the male gaze. It sucks. Feels hard to escape it.

Thanks for your perspective! I think context makes a huge difference though. I’ve definitely been addressed by, “hey guys” and I’ve definitely addressed my sisters with “hey guys” without any intended offense or any offense taken. I think part of it is the bilingual in me, but considering the wide usage of “guys” in a gender neutral context I’m clearly not alone... This is interestingly something I’m not bothered by and use often... I’ve never felt excluded or like I was excluding others. It always did feel like the English equivalent of ‘ustedes’. It’s something I’ll consider in the future, but I personally never associated it with gender either. I’d never refer to a group as “men”, “gentlemen”, or “boys” though because they are different in my mind.

Same! Every once in a while I shave them and every time I do I consider how ingrained this “beauty” standard is for me that I shave my legs even though nobody will see them... I’ve spent so many hours of my life shaving them... so much time insecure about them. And it’s just part of who I am. My grandpa and mom were making fun of how gross unshaved underarms are on women the other day and I just don’t get it. Haha omg neon leg hairs would be amazing! I love this thought experiment... I will argue though that bigger chairs are more comfy and larger cabinets are good for having more space. Seatbelts would be safety tested on women There would be wide usage of male birth control. The burden of birth control would be on them. Men would have a curfew, so women could go out safely at night Men wouldn’t be allowed to own weapons, but women could Shaving and hair removal for women wouldn’t be a thing. Exactly, that’s me right now. One of the main reasons is I really can’t see a way to do so safely that isn’t something like going on walk dates... one guy is planning on dropping off a homemade cocktail and dinner for me this week, but the only reason that’s posible is bc I know him well enough to share my address. I know this is months later, but I just found this thread after reading the book. Definitely worth the read. The recommended steps for recovery here are: Go for help. Seek support from whatever groups/counseling you need. Make your own recovery the first priority in your life. Find a support group of peers who understand.
