In the hypothetical situation, it's 1000 people who have definitely done the crime (sentenced, correctly, with evidence) and 1 person who didn't (sentenced, incorrectly, with evidence). Not that I necessarily disagree, but you're arguing from a principle. If we argued this from a societal health perspective, and assuming all 1001 people are being charged with the same thing, then the false positive ratio seems pretty good wouldn't you think? Also, if it's all a charge for something minor that 1 person isn't too bad off. If it's all for murder or rape, it sucks for that person yeah, but then you've also got rid of 1000 murderers/rapists.
