The way you usually figure out whether some statistic is over or under reported is by changing the way you ask the question or by finding other stats that are known to positively correlate. So when asking men whether they've been raped you would ask something like "Did she threaten you to make you have sed with her?" I've heard feminists claim that men are more likely to report violence against them than women.
