It's awesome that you're still here writing these lines man! You're fighting despite the shitty cards you've been dealt. That's very impressive. Therapy can be tricky and it can be hard to find the right therapist with the right approach. I understand your choice of not wanting to go back. Whatever you do, I hope you'll find paths towards at least a bit more peace. Surround yourself with good people, that's very important.

But I luckily got over that, mostly. That's good! So you were basically a way for her to vent. That's rough and 100% unacceptable. I hope you know this isn't your fault. When we are kids and our parents feel bad, we tend to automatically think we're the reason. As we grow, we eventually become more self-aware but this shit can stick with you. I hope you're able to differentiate between her demons and your feelings. I was thinking today how much we accept parents being mean towards their kids, ye…

My mom said similar things. I've heard about men being rapists and that we should cut their dick at a very young age. Her dad was indeed violent and possibly a rapist. But that's a not good way to grow up as a boy, hearing those things. Maybe some mothers think that's how you prevent boys from becoming bad men but I think it does more harm than good. I think it's more about your mom and her life experience than you. It makes sense that you're overly cautious about this subject. Your mom shouldn'…

I really want him to be able to talk to me about this because it seems like he's never really spoken about this with anyone. I don't think it's necessarily healthy for him to talk to you about all of this if he doesn't feel comfortable doing so. He told you quite a lot already, which is good and a very good sign your relationship is on the right track, him telling you more doesn't mean he'll feel better. If he needs healing, he should do it with a therapist. Don't pressure him and don't make him…

the psyche would rather be cynical and egotistical, overgeneralizing that all women, all men are bad in this and that way, are justified to be bad and this and that way.. Incels and hateful feminsists have a lot more in common than they think.

Thanks! That's basically what I was expecting. I've never had that bill issue but it might be a cultural thing. I've never had really awful dates with women but I'm not surprised you can feel it's more stressful with them. There was this post on the front page today that addresses a similar idea in regard to when people ask atheists where their moral compass is. The idea that men are beasts that need to be tamed is disgusting.

I think a huge number of feminists women have been traumatized by one or multiple bad experiences with men (or what they believe was caused by men) and they haven't healed yet. They seem stuck in the stage where facing the complexity of reality is too painful, when your wound is still fresh it feels better to take refuge in black and white thinking and other cognitive dissonances that simplify a very painful and confusing reality. The world is too often a shitty and absurd place. Sometimes the o…

If you believe all men are above you, you can say whatever you want and frame it as a joke since it's punching up. Now, what if she wrote "kill all gay black men" or "kill all trans men" ? Mmm... They're still men right?

Very true. I understand the desire OP had to clarify things but most "discussions" about gender issues are purely emotional. If you come to an emotional discussion with rationality, there'll be tension and it won't end well. Gender issues are highly emotional, it touches on very dark stuff that are dear to people's heart, it's really hard to have a calm discussion. And, like you said, the outrage is often here by design.
/r/LeftWingMaleAdvocates18/01/22 09:22 AM
21

Definitely. I'm a big believer in the notion that hurt people hurt people and that education helps a lot. I believe that most guys who harass, rape, attack others are often traumatized to some extent or have not grown into a good environment, the role models you have around you are incredibly important. Unfortunately we are in great need of good male role models. Men used to have mentors, we don't anymore. Men used to have more friends too. Isolating people and making them deal with their issue …

Over their lifetime, 79 percent of men who were “made to penetrate” someone else (a form of rape, in the view of most researchers) reported female perpetrators. Maybe I don't get it but that doesn't mean 80% of all rapes on men are by women. “made to penetrate” is a subset of all rapes isn't it?

Yes the more I think about that concept the less I believe it can be fixed and it's by design, when can we honestly say patriarchy is over? As long as men exist, someone could argue that patriarchy is alive and well right?
/r/LeftWingMaleAdvocates31/12/21 02:26 PM
44

Thank you! Those are pretty straightforward facts. I wonder what a proponent of toxic masculinity would argue against those. I guess they would redirect the discourse towards patriarchy basically saying "yeah sure men might seek help and not find it but if they built a better society they would feel better, so, in the end it's still their fault since it's their system that's in place".

I think their logic is that it's not all men that rape and kill and harass but all men have it in them. Some might have their animality more under control that's all. So in a way it is all men. Also, men are part of a club whether men admit it or not there is always a club that will help them. So again, all men are in the same group according to feminists, individual differences don't matter since men participate in one way or another to sexism.

I think my sister learned a lot about men's point of view by growing up with me. I don't represent all men of course but I believe that when you live in proximity with someone different it humanizes them and you see a different perspective. Tribalism is a terrible thing. I understand that humans feel safer in a familiar environment but our modern society tends to strongly reinforce social bubbles and we can fall victim to intellectual myopia. We are all humans and if you have someone suffering i…

i used the word society recently on Reddit when talking about how society sees men as replaceable. Someone corrected me and wrote : "society men". They always find a way to make men the only possible origin for men suffering as if women/trans/non binary... aren't part of society and can't be sexist too or part of the problem. We're all connected for better and for worse, why is it so hard to believe?

That's what we call a high maintenance girl and that's what I was referring to when I talked about immature women. This is not acceptable behavior and I agree with you that it's hypocritical. I think we shouldn't encourage this attitude and focus on more mature women. The issue I fear is: these women are part of feminism, probably part of the most vocal ones because of how entitled like kids they are, so they clearly have an influence on the zeitgeist and that's problematic.

I think they want someone strong and stable but emotionally open since vulnerability is essential to connection. Not every cry is emasculating but they can often be. It's not all or nothing. But it also requires the woman to be strong and emotionally stable herself, otherwise she won't understand those subtleties and see every cry as weak. Also everyone's different, and being aware of who you're attracted to is important. Some women like the Byronic hero, the sensitive poet, others like the stro…

Thank you! I'm quite fascinated by this particular topic being a man that cries easily. I agree with your analysis. Words are just words, people need to understand what they imply and just saying something doesn't make it real. Actions speak louder than words and social issues are, for a big part, more demonstration than action. I tend to think that most people saying that have good intentions and do want men to feel better but many of them are confused and don't really know what it's like to be…

In my view, it really depends on your objective. Do you want to improve your relationship with him? Or do you want to feel better yourself? A family therapist is really for those who want to improve their relationships but you don't have to improve anything if you don't want to. Sometimes you have to cut ties or reduce your interactions with toxic people, even if they are family. In any case, a therapist, for yourself, can help you sort this all out in your own mind and grieve for the dad you di…

I'm aware that some people can trauma dump, or be overbearing. But people of all genders do this Yes. I really believe a mature woman can hear a man and give him support with no bad intent. I've said it in another comment but I think many women don't learn how to do that because they think they already know how to do it when they actually don't. Women are seen as wiser by default when it comes to relationships and emotions and it prevents a lot of them from really learning how to handle emotions in others. They really have no fucking clue about how relations between men are. They want to act like they know what we are, but they don't. I feel like there's this preconceived idea that women are, by default, more advanced emotionally and more knowledgeable about humans and relationships and that, because they're women, they know everything about the genders and the sexes. Well, they'll say it's because of internalized sexism in those cases. It's funny because few people will use the term internalized patriarchy I guess because it breaks the idea that men are the cause of all suffering if a woman is doing it. A woman can be as sexist as a man but it won't be as much her fault as a man doing the same thing.
/r/LeftWingMaleAdvocates01/10/21 01:02 PM

Yes it's not a good argument to say it's all men's fault. It's all interconnected, men and women don't exist in a vacuum and not everything can be explained by social issues: economics, psychology, biology, language, culture can all have an impact on how people behave and perceive each other. This logic of men being the almighty unique cause of every problem comes from a simplistic interpretation of the concept of patriarchy. In the end we should all strive (men, women, trans, every race, every …

Just by watching the trailer I understood how bad it was going to be. It is not subtle.
