He was far too forceful and didn't realize that the method he was using to try and pull her out of the desk was causing more resistance because she was caught up in it. His force caused the desk to fall backwards, not her flailing; her flailing was the result of the natural human response to grab at something when your center of gravity has been unbalanced.
