If they didn't understand that you were just casually dating then they probably made the assumption you were serious. You found someone that you've really connected with and would like to date them exclusively but would want to remain friends if possible. Obviously respect the girl's wishes if she can't be platonic friends with you and cut them out if they can't take no for an answer and respect your wishes.
