What are you even trying to argue here? Self defense is always justified, he was already well past the point where he could have avoided the altercation, if he had not reacted to the spitting then she would have pursued and escalated to fists/slaps. I have been in that situation myself, sometimes you have to knock some sense into a rabid animal when it won't stop assaulting you.
