They're simply saying that given the choice between encountering a random man and a random bear, most of these women would prefer a bear. The fact that a man is a worse alternative is only implied. C'mon now guy. I agree with you overall but lets not be glib about this. I think its perfectly valid for this comparison to hurt a man's feelings.
