I think about this a lot. Right now, I have been considering it specifically concerning a sex life. I am the only woman in my family who can say she has never been raped, molested, or sexually abused - how horrendous is that? And yet, I am positive my family is not unique in its history of sexual abuse of wives, daughters, and sisters. Now, I am not at all saying that I have had terrific, always-good sex with a caring partner - in fact, I have had that maybe once. All of the sex I have had - mos…

I think it also highlights how 'consent', instead of being the lowest possible bar for anything approaching decency, is a get-out-of-jail-free card for so many men.

This is honestly one of the reasons I have been single for more than five years. 🤷‍♀️

I want to post a gif showing how much I agree with what you said, but I don't know how. Just know that the gif was Lauryn Hill from Sister Act 2 nodding and waving her hand.

I think so many are delusional, like 'when civilization ends I'll be able to protec and attacc hur hur'. We see you. We are not interested or impressed.

His desire to be a lazy, selfish asshole is so strong he can't control it!

Not to mention, now hopefully at least the five-year-old will see a parent leaving a relationship that doesn't work equally! I hope this child can see his/her mother happy.

Oh, I didn't mean to say it was rational or irrational - wanting to go for a drive with your loved one is perfectly rational. I'm not blaming her or pointing fingers for anything. I really was just curious why she didn't drive herself. I think he should not have been an asshole about it - if you don't want to, don't. Alternately, if you agree to do it, do it at least with courtesy and love. Weird situation for me to understand, I guess.

I mean, I honestly don't understand why she didn't just go for a drive herself...? I've never been pregnant, so is that what I'm missing? I also tend to be pretty solitary and go for solo drives all the time. 🤷‍♀️

The same standards and expectations we have for women, we should have for men. If we expect women to do it, men should do it. No exceptions. Kid is sick? Stay home from work to care for him/her. Kid pooped? Change the diaper. Hungry? Cook for your kid. Spending time with your kid? Put the phone away. Other parent is out of town? Be a functioning, responsible adult and take care of your kid in all ways until your spouse returns - no dropping at grandma's, no 'my wife left my older daughter instru…

Andrea Dworkin's Pornography: Men Possessing Women, is her argument that sex, for men, is about "penetrating" women's boundaries, not even necessarily their bodies. Sex for men is necessarily a way to degrade women, because the degradation itself is the sexual act; it's psychological, not physical. I haven't met a man that made me disagree. 🤷‍♀️

I escorted at an abortion clinic for a bit, and you would escort women in some Saturdays that you had seen previous days on the edge of the clinic's property, protesting. The very next Saturday, those women would be right back with their male harasser friends, yelling at the women going into the clinic. Hypocrites, hypocrites, hypocrites. My favorite protesters were always the Catholics. They just duct-taped their mouths shut. It was very considerate of them.

Too true about de Beauvoir, unfortunately. And the crucible effect - now I have a name for it! Thank you.

Or Foucault, or Sartre, or any other male French intellectuals... Luce Irigaray, Monique Wittig, and Francoise d'Eaubonne are all pretty rad though. Tl;dr: Frenchmen are shit, but French feminists kick ass.

I think it's also important to remember that for most of industrialized history women were working in factories doing backbreaking labor for 12 hour (or longer!) shifts too, along with children. This idea that men worked and women cleaned house was a 10 to 20 year phase - and that too only for the wealthy, often white families. Women work their asses off too, and men need to get over the fact that they have to clean the damn house in which they live. The illusion is that there ever truly was a '…

I came here to comment along the lines of "Eh, maybe, but the goal is to be good if it doesn't happen". So pleased to see you ladies not only beat me to it but made it better by being that person yourselves. Love and joy to you all. ❤

Yes, you let him go because you can't honestly stop him. He's legally and physically (although maybe not mentally, clearly) an adult who makes his own decisions. What you don't let him do is come back into your life in any capacity.

Oh, absolutely. I think whoever coined the phrase was using it to differentiate between men who do sexist things because "women are weaker and need men's help" and men who are openly sexist and hostile. Sexism is sexism, though, for sure.

I think they were probably referring to the already-defined term 'benevolent sexism', not implying that there can be a benevolent sexism.

Dworkin's Right Wing Women goes into an excellent analysis of left- versus right-wing men. The desire to own and control women doesn't change: it's the ideas of how to accomplish this goal that differ.

The "real life" comment FROM THE MOM is what gets me. It DID happen in real life, that's why your daughter had a goddamn bruise and rash on her face. I will never understand how so many people somehow think sex is divorced from reality. It is a microcosm of reality, not exempt from it.

Thank you! I'll look into The Human Magnet Syndrome. A lot of the things you describe ring a bell. I tend to be a worrier, but you are right that it doesn't help.

Thank you for this. For any of you on here who have been through it, how do you not worry about being cheated on again in a new relationship? My last relationship ended with him cheating and that, along with some other things that happened, have me really worried about dating again in the future.

"All sex positivity does in reality is to take away women's rights to sexual boundaries." Yes, I agree. Spot on. Andrea Dworkin's take on this in Right Wing Women is excellent.

Yes, I disliked that line too. Every woman I've ever spoken freely with has tried to teach men how to have sex well. Men don't care to learn, is the issue, and we aren't responsible for that.

My ex said these exact words to me multiple times while we were still together. (Potentially TMI: This is after a year and a half of sex being blowing him for a bit while taking care of myself and then him jackhammering away for two minutes before falling asleep while I finished myself off.) I cannot say how much it fucked with me. Tbh, I still get nervous about being with someone new and the same cycle repeating itself. Reading the sex section of the FDS Handbook is amazing, and I have some wor…

I don't care how stubborn he or any man is, boobs gonna sag. Ain't no getting around it. And he should have kept his stupid comments to himself so that YOU could remain attracted to HIM.

This is why I think women should never let the man take care of transportation until he has been well and truly vetted. Meet him somewhere.
