I coach HS track and had my group of sprinters do 3x pushups to failure, and when they're limbs where shaky I told them to go knock out 50 more at their own pace. I learned this by reading about Navy Seal David Goggins and his 40% rule which states when your body tells you you're done, you're only really 40% done.
