I also think, this is very much deliberate in nature. Think of this, a depopulated world is easier to control, the plan IS to make marriage a hard sell. With automation, all sorts of modern day jobs would be in danger. Taxi drivers, accountants, all the blue collar work, maybe even teachers, doctors and lawyers would be out of work. If the population declines, it becomes easier for these big corporations, and the government, which would have to come up with a Marxist style Universal Basic Income…

Well, Automation is set to take unemployment to new heights, I think that might be a factor to consider.
