I have no issue with having a mentor when you might be attempting to learn a craft, such as metallurgy. That is normal and to be expected. I take issue with the suggestion that men need mentoring to get through the entirety of their lives, which is what it seems OP is referring to. Suggesting that men need mentors or therapy to guide them through life implies that however we choose to live our lives is somehow wrong or deeply flawed in of itself. It’s very sad that this kind of thinking is so heavily ingrained in so many of us; that we have to fulfill some flimsy societal standard of what a man is in order to be considered as such. I just read a post from a dude explaining that he doesn’t know how to drive and have no plans to do so because it saves money. His girlfriend that KNOWS he doesn’t want to drive then gifts him a driving lesson coupon for his birthday, and, SURPRISE, he doesn’t like the gift.
