That's the problem, there is no source for the claim that shows their methodology so we don't know. Women do the majority of household shopping and much of this money is spent on things like detergent, toilet paper, food for the family, etc., so while it's accurate to say they "control it" it doesn't necessarily mean they own it or they're spending it for their benefit.
