Life imprisonment removes them from society. There’s not enough valid “clear-cut cases” like this one to justify its use. There are still countless stories of innocent people being jailed for decades/killed before being proven they were innocent. Even one state sanctioned murder of an innocent person is too much for the death penalty to be on the table.
