I thought that winking was a really creepy thing to do. It seems like such an old mannish thing to do. My granddad sometimes winks at me when we share a dirty joke, and girls that I've talked to that work checkouts say that old men are always the creepiest, often mentioning winking at them.

Trial and error. If you flirt and don't get positive results, you need to change your approach. That's learning from your mistakes.

How long have you been with her?

I had a very, very similar conversation with my new girlfriend. She accepts and encourages my decision, and understands that I want to be intimate and social with as many people as I can. Before the conversation, I had stopped approaching for a little while because I didn't want to "cheat" on her. It drove me crazy when I went out because I wanted to approach but I couldn't without wanting to practise escalation. Her: If you love me then why am I not enough? Me: Love does not mean being my entir…

I went to a coffee shop once and ordered my drink. I spotted a pretty girl behind the counter and asked the girl serving me if she could get her attention for me. She turned around and looked kind of sceptical and pissed off, like she was having a bad day, but I still went on. "Are you single?" I said. "...Yes.. why..?" she replied. "I find you attractive and I'd like to get to know you. Would you please get me something to write with so I can give you my number?". She seemed weirded out as hell…

The same thing I learned from /r/howtonotgiveafuck, which is "Don't give a fuck"

Exactly. It's just a fun way to approach someone. Of course you have to be able to keep the interest going, or else any one liner -- even "Hi, I'm _____, what's your name?" -- is useless.

Sure, but it's stifling to ONLY text like that. And I'm not like that at all. I have had three dates in the last week, one with a girl I had just met, one with a girl I had approached the previous week and outright asked for her number (which we texted and Facebooked occasionally in the time being) and one with a girl that I had purposely avoided texting. The last girl gave me this "I just want what we had to be a one-night-stand" independent woman-type talk at the end of a night of dancing.

By all means I think that people should know how to text "well" but I also think that the most important thing is being yourself. If you have to think about your texting "game" there's this catch-22 where you have to remind yourself to text this and hold back on saying whatever.. it feels awfully contrived. At the same time I dislike texting in general, not just because of the fact that it's not physically talking to someone, but because it's just a damn nuisance and distraction from whatever I …

I don't think it's because you're black. I think they're just not attracted to you and that's their excuse, offensive as it is. If you work on your confidence, they will become attracted to you. And then you can blow off those racist bitches who wouldn't have otherwise given you the time of day. Subscribe to /r/howtonotgiveafuck and /r/socialskills if you aren't already.

Why can't I do both? I can't be bothered giving a fuck about two opposing schools of thought telling me that I'm going about it wrong. It shouldn't be so black-and-white.

There's been quite a few posts in this SR about revamping the moderation and the content a bit. The one that I can agree with the most is the one that went on about how there's not enough in here about experience instead of theory, and too few "field reports". It's fine when theory is based on experience, like "try this because [brief field report containing a neat idea you came up with]" This is all really in line with what you're talking about here. Regarding texting, I've definitely found tha…
