OMG you were married to my ex as well 😂

I generally don't think about my ex much. That said anger is the appropriate emotion to have at how she treated me so I'm also not worried about being angry when I think about how she treated me.

2 years from when it got really bad. If I was in the same situation now I wouldn't give it two weeks.

I was in a similar situation. Not as bad but similar. I ended up buying my ex out with all of the equity in the house that she never contributed a dime to... Best of luck.

The wife always wants a 50%/50% split... She gets the $ and you get the debt.

This exactly to me. For a good time I was really mad about loosing the house. Now I have a smaller but better place. It gets better. At this point I'm grateful for a lot of wonderful memories of great times with my Ex-Wife but I want nothing to do with who she decided to become.

Go get a lawyer and a therapist and then go to the gym. The sooner you let go the sooner you get your life back.

Legal separation just gives her the ability to screw you over later.
/r/Divorce_Men12/02/26 10:38 AM

She's your ex. You are not responsible for her life choices or the outcome of her decisions. It's hard to let go sometimes.

Ment with the utmost kindness. In my experience pushing back emotions is bad. For me they have a way oozing out into my life what with them being under so much pressure back there. The only way out is through.

I get wanting to understand but all that does is give someone who has treated you horribly the opportunity too to treat you horribly again.

For me it was kind of a cycle. Before the divorce I drank to much because I felt hopeless and trapped and that made me feel more hopeless and trapped the next day. I had to quit so I could work through what I was feeling when I added the gym and daily long walks my mindset really improved.

Couples therapy can just as well help end a relationship in the kindest and most respectful way that it can end.

There's a great video on "Can you be friends with an ex?" on the School of Life YouTube channel.

Off on a tangent on self care here. I started taking much better care of myself when I divorced. In that process I stopped drinking. I find that framing things like stopping drinking and smoking matters a lot to me. If I think about "giving up" something like smoking or drinking I'm doomed but if I frame it as "stopping" it's a little bit easier. Sorry for the digression and it could just be me.

Sure but cut the guy some slack. That sucks. It's perfectly normal to be a bit of a mess with that much drama coming at him.

I was in a similar situation in November 2019. I ended up divorcing in November 2021. I spent two years working on fixing the relationship and she spent two years putting herself in a better position to take as much as possible. My advice is to talk to a lawyer and a therapist. If she's acting like it's over it's over. My only regret is spending that two years being treated so poorly by my ex-wife.

Hey so everyone is different but I get angry at how much blame I put on myself when I go back and look at my journal from when my ex did just this. You live your life but I want nothing to do with someone who expects me to be a mind-reader while taking no care for my feelings or contributions. At less than 3 years of marriage it is unlikely that you would have to pay any support. Go talk with an attorney. The longer you wait the worse it gets and the situation you're in is the situation you're in.

If the socks and pants get mixed together they will collapse onto a singularity and suck the world into a black hole... This sort of shit all the time with my ex-wife as well but I was supposed to be forgiving when she bashes in the truck fender on a gas station bollard and doesn't even mention it.. For the life of me I have no idea why I stayed with her as long as I did. I remember being devastated at the end but I can't remember why now..

Have you intermingled the inheritance by putting it in joint accounts or is it separate in accounts that are just in your name? Go get a lawyer. You have both maintained separate finances and you have not been married for long. Even if you stay together you should get a post nuptial agreement codifying your separate finances. If she is unwilling to agree to this you should get a divorce. You are most likely OK.

I think that the real point that I am trying to make is that everyone should talk through what they are agreeing to when they are thinking about getting married and then go through the effort of codifying what they agree on in a legally binding prenuptial agreement. Without a prenuptial agreement you are agreeing to the laws of the state you find yourself living in at the time of separation. This will help ensure both parties don't forget all of the terms discussed and agreed to going in.

I don't know that there is much you can do to help your daughter other than make sure she as a bank account that is just her account and an opportunity to put her pay in that account. To my mind this is a no brainer. Your daughter earned the money neither you our your ex or anyone else should have any say about it. It's your daughter's she earned it.

You will be fine. Take a deep breath get an attorney and a therapist if you haven't already and be honest and forthcoming with both of them. Follow your attorney's advice and tell your therapist how you are feeling and doing and listen to what they have to say. (Don't use your attorney for your therapist) Spend your free time with your kids and it will all be a blessing in the end.

This is one of the mentally healthiest posts I have seen. That said please consider talking with a therapist as well at least as a divorce coach. This should be separate from couples counseling. You have my best wishes and respect. Really very impressive good human stuff..

In NC you have to live separate for a year before the divorce is final. If you file in NC with the kids she will have to pay support. You can even have the state collect the child support..

Get a lawyer and file now.. Before she files from Denver and some Judge there decides the kids are better off with mom.. Seriously talk to a lawyer ASAP! like today if you can..
/r/Divorce_Men05/12/24 06:19 PM

Get a lawyer and follow their advice. You can give her an upper hand in a divorce if you have already left the house. If she needs the space to "work on herself" and it is her idea she should put on her grown-up pants and go secure that place..

NTA Being friends and being friendly when you run into her are two different things. Three years on I don't talk to my Ex at all. I would be friendly if I ran into her but in the end I am just indifferent about her. I don't wish her ill but I don't expend any effort wishing her well. The opposite of love is indifference not hate.

First things first. Please contact someone if you are having suicidal thoughts. You have two children that need you at the very least. Please consider finding a therapist and do you best to be as open and honest with them about your feelings and emotions. I have found that my divorce provided an opportunity to work through an amazing amount of my own stuff and this has allowed me to be a much better father to my son and friend to all of the wonderful people who are in my life. That said three ye…

If you children are living on their own in college there may be an opportunity to send the payments directly to them. It is after all money to support your children not your ex wife. Talk with an attorney.

Good to hear. I'm sorry you are going through this. I have a good friend who lost her husband in a motorcycle accident around the same time as my divorce. A lot of the emotions are the same and the grief can lead to poor decisions in both situations. I found therapy very useful during the process.
/r/Divorce_Men07/11/24 03:48 PM

The best advice that I can give you is to do the following two things ASAP. Get an attorney and follow their advice to the letter. Get a therapist and talk through your emotions. Be as forthcoming to each of them as possible. This sucks but to be honest it is also a huge opportunity to take stock of your own life and come to the other side in a much better place.
/r/Divorce_Men07/11/24 03:37 PM

You can go to counseling to work through how to break up. Regardless the kind thing is to talk with her honestly about how you are feeling.
/r/Divorce_Men05/11/24 07:16 PM

The only way to answer this question is to get an attorney. Please do that an follow their advice.

Keep track of all of the expences getting the house ready for sale. This should go to you out of proceeds of the sale before dividing up the rest.
/r/Divorce_Men05/11/24 04:21 PM
3

If you stay get a post nup that divides your finances now and stipulates the conditions for divorce later. Otherwise you will just be giving her a dividend on all of your savings and starting alimony when you are close to retirement. If she has your children's best interests as her main concern she will agree to this if she is just setting you up for greater financial pain later she will be angry at you for looking out for your best interest. Regardless my advice is get an attorney ASAP.
