exactly right!!!! denying the existence of toxic masculinity only allows it to flourish and take a hold over society. if we as individuals can’t look at ourselves and see how we are perpetuating toxic dated gender stereotypes the how are we supposed to move on past this? how can you claim to care about men’s mental health and then actively deny all of the real world issues that are hindering it. i wonder what it is that u would say explains such a spike in men going through mental health struggl…

The idea of toxic masculinity actually takes the blame off of the victim rather than victim blaming. Toxic masculinity places the blame on the society in which we live rather than the individual. the society holds these stereotypes of what men should be like and anything outside of that is criticised. masculinity is only toxic when it is negatively affecting society or themselves so when men are told to man up this negatively affects the making it toxic masculinity. Like I just said this places …

well that would be as a result of toxic masculinity yeah. toxic masculinity itself is the idea that men are shamed for certain traits that arent seen or be as obviously “masculine” one of which could be wearing makeup for example or it could also be being told to man up. this means men are less likely to seek help for their issues aswell as men not being taken seriously when they do. i’m not sure if people are just intentionally missing my point or what but in my perspective everyone needs to ac…

yeah sure maybe you’re right! but the patriarchy still perpetuates traditional gender roles leading to toxic masculinity which was my whole point. we can umm and ahhh about the circumstances of the past which, i may be uneducated on sure, and i totally agree with most of what ur saying i just think that society as a whole does not really work in favour of anyone and that is because of the patriarchy. you could argue that the patriarchy only benefits the power elite sure but that’s not really my …

you are missing my point. op seemed to b upset with the post and i agree it’s a rude and unnecessary post, i’m just saying that there is atleast a little validity on the second slide when you consider the existence of toxic masculinity and gender roles. i don’t even necessarily agree with her like this should have never even been posted i just wanted to make the point that we can’t expect things to get better without looking at ourselves first and seeing what we are doing wrong and how we can ch…

maybe let’s use the words gender roles then bc that sort of includes toxic masculinity without mentioning it

well if we’re gnna use men as a general term then yes and no. ur average man is not responsible for gender roles, he did not create them however SOME are guilty of reinforcing them. obviously mental health is not one size fits all but in some cases yes other men are the culprits but also so are women and whatever other gender you identify with; it’s literally just anyone who adhered to/ reinforces dated gender roles

tbh i’m a marxist before i am a feminist i think the only way to achieve equal rights is the abolition of the capitalist system but like that’s not one of my core beliefs i kinda just think women deserve to govern themselves and their bodies etc. (abolition of capitalism obviously one of my core beliefs i meant feminism isn’t one of my core beliefs sorry ik that reads rlly weird i’m tired lol)

maybe i’m misusing the word patriarchy please do tell me if i am but i was more using it in relation to the creation of gender roles and norms. these aren’t really restricted by class

bro what? i think i used the word women once?? just because you advocate for men’s rights doesn’t mean you have to throw your dummy out of the pram the second a woman is mentioned. u guys are insanely misinformed or not informed at all lol please read a book

like i just said, how can you assume that that’s my view when i haven’t said it is lol. do you even know what toxic masculinity is? toxic masculinity is not against masculinity as a whole it’s just against the toxic aspects. i’ll lay some out for you; so violence for example or objectifying women etc etc. this is not to say that ALL men do this or that this is necessarily inherent to being a man or being masculine this is just some things we can observe of men in too high quantities to ignore. t…

you do not know me so how can u assume that that’s my view?? have i said i think all masculinity is toxic because i don’t lol? you can’t really go into a discussion with someone and not hear them out because u think u know it all already. that’s step one on how to come across as arrogant

the things u listed are all a product of the patriarchy though. women were not seen as competent so they weren’t allowed to handle money. i’m pretty sure that it was recent (last 50 or so years) that women could even take out loans in their own names bc banks just did not trust women with money for whatever reason. same with the draft: women are and we’re seen as fragile and in need of protection. we can’t have women fighting wars when they need to tend to children and their house as well as the…

i really hope you’re joking otherwise ur just slow because i said a number of times it is 100% NOT the victims fault. it’s society forcing men to behave a certain way. u always hear “boys don’t cry” but men should not be taught to bottle their emotions. i could go on all day about how the patriarchy reinforces toxic gender norms but i won’t waste my breath. i feel like i’m wasting my time discussing this with you specifically because you’re being obtuse. you’re reading my comments and interpreti…

no1 is blaming men i’m actually doing the opposite. i’m blaming the societal standards placed on men aka toxic masculinity and gender roles for making men think they need to be one thing which leads to bad mental health
/r/MensRights21/11/21 03:32 AM

i disagree because it’s absolutely not blaming the victim. atleast in my viewpoint. toxic masculine is a societal issue and we as a society need to change. toxic masculinity can’t really be discussed on an individual basis

everything you have said is 100% correct but it’s as a result of the patriarchy existing. women can also reinforce toxic masculinity sorry j should have mentioned that previously. the patriarchy negatively effects both men and women. what we need to do is challenge it and live according to our needs with no fear of judgment... obviously that’s long in the future but i’m optimistic

a big reason that men’s mental health is as bad as it is at the moment is a result of toxic masculinity; men are told not to cry and are bullied for being feminine etc and this is reinforced by other men through toxic masculinity. i can’t speak for the person who wrote the original post but i think that the point of it was to say that it can be hypocritical of SOME men to point out that how bad men’s mental health is and then reinforce toxic gender roles which could be one of the causes of such …
