Agreed. Xanex is an emergency pill only. Its the benzo that is the one that is most abused, because it hits you fast, but then 3-4 hours later; you want another one. An SSRI like Lexapro or Zoloft is a much safer approach- IF you have to medicate.

I don't know what benzo she was on; or at what dose, or for how long; but medically speaking; no doctor would EVER stop a patient from taking a benzo (if they were dependent on it); cold turkey. It can kill you. Or you can have a seizure which can cause brain damage. It simply would be medically reckless to tell a patient to just stop- no matter what the health reason. I have a friend who has to fly internationally for work, and she is literally terrified of flying. Terrified. So much so she can't sleep the night before. I would say getting drunk, as in "drunk", once a week- 100% screws with your entire body chemistry. I enjoy wine, but I don't drink it till I am drunk passing out. If I do, I feel off- for days afterwards. It stays in your system. So if you think having your system out of balance, readjusting to "no-alcohol" in your body state for 3-4 out of every 7 days doesn't have a significant effect on anxiety, you may want to think again.

Thats called protracted withdrawal syndrome. Did she have a doctor help her taper off? Tapering off too quickly; which is why my doctor stresses there is no "correct speed" rather; you cut 1/4 pill, or 1/2 pill or 1/8 pill down every 2 or 3 weeks, and see how you feel. For alcohol withdraw, which I have read can be really bad (I don't drink much), they use benzos during the withdraw stage. Librium I think; which is really long acting... Or they use Valium. Benzos do in a way have the same effect, but you'd have to dose high to get drunk as in "10 shots drunk". One downside is Benzos supress REM sleep. I've noticed I don't dream as much as I did before taking them. But that will come back when I'm fully off.

Excersize, healthy diet and consistent sleep schedule. A therapist; to talk through problems, Yoga is great. Things that relax you. Avoid stressors. Avoid drugs and alcohol. Theres nothing wrong with Benzos if they are used properly; such as if someone is highly fearful of flying; or going to the dentist. A benzo pill a few times a year will not rewire you. 4 pills a day for a year will.

Well and thats what the benzos do; they just take the edge off. Literally. Its a hard drug to describe if you havent taken them. I'm currently tapering off a 4mg (was at) to zero over likely 10ish months. I am under a pharmacologists care (psychiatrist) who specializes in medication management- and getting off. The problem with Ativan or any other benzo is that even while ativan; like klonopin; has a relatively median half-life; you cannot depend on it, nor should you be on it, long term. I speak from experience. I was perscribed Klonopin (which is basically the same as Ativan); at a very low dose 6 years ago.
