That does make PERFECT sense though. Simply put, hypergamy dictates that women "marry up". They want to use their income as leverage to date/marry a higher status male. While I do agree with you in principle, I think of weddings as a field study; you go out and observe the beast in its natural habitat. You see all the needless spending, how everything revolves around the bride and her ultimate social orgasm, and how the groom is relegated to being the financier of the whole thing.
