This has worked for me: approach the girl next to the girl you're interested in- "What's your name?" <shake hands> "Please tell me your adorable friend here is single" (head motioning to target girl). If either nods yes, get the target's name and shake hands. If they say "no, she's <married/boyfriend>" -- then "Well we don't need her as a third wheel, <name>" and go from there.
