1	seriously... Because you're only thinking of the North American system, not everywhere works like that. One of my friends is 24 and is a practicing doctor. My sister received her doctorate before 25. Now a professor, not working at Starbucks. Works on policy as well, so I think your view of academics is pretty narrow. Personally I graduated from my bachelor's a month after 21, could have wrapped up a PhD in the UK at 24 but entered industry instead. It's not that weird.
