“I’ve become the man that I was supposed to marry.” This is hitting me right in the feels 😭

Reading this feels like I’ve entered a portal into another world. In a very bad, bad way. It sounds like the wife is the only sane person in the story, but then you realize she’s actually married to the abuser and is in no way questioning this.

Loving yourself is an important first step to self respect, having standards and enforcing boundaries. It will protect you from LVM with ill intentions. On the other hand, I do agree that there is no reason whatsoever to treat someone badly just because they have low self esteem or don’t love themselves. But people do, apparently. And yes there is evidence that a good, safe, loving relationship can be a major aid in improving your mental health. But because we do not live in a Disney fairy tale:…

If you have a lot of casual sex, your brain will make less dopamine and oxytocin because it is traumatic for the body to create bonds and then break them shortly after. So it protects itself by not bonding anymore when having sex. In other words: players do this to themselves. And that is also one of the reasons we don’t date community dick.

Reading what you’ve said, I think you’ll regret moving in with him. So I’d recommend you to follow your gut here. He has everything to win, and you have a lot to lose.

There was a thread about this earlier today. Absolutely do NOT give them your phone number or personal details they can use to identify you before meeting and vetting them! Tell them you want to stay on the app until you’ve actually met them. If they refuse or push.. well then you know that it’s time to take the trash out. Block and delete.

Be aware that most women are still 100% in the patriarchy. These women in the documentary are victims of the system and our society has failed them. Here at FDS we see the system, the patriarchy, for what it is and arm ourselves against these practices. The best we can do is keep converting women to the cause, and uphold our own boundaries and standards. The world is sick. Netflix could have done with a societal critique at the end of this documentary. Now it’s just that Simon Leviev guy and “no…

Well patriarchy tells us it’s all safe and we should definitely trust men!! I see these women as victims of the system. Our society has failed them. FDS makes one aware of this system.

Yeah.. this woman is heavily traumatized and should NOT be broadcasting her “sex pozzy” attitude around as there’s nothing positive in it for any woman. It muddles the water and normalizes SA-trauma responses in our society. This woman is not living, she’s surviving in the way she knows best. It’s so easy to see now. Our society has much to learn. I’d say give her a blanket and cover her up well. 😭

Hmm well there’s this book on attachment issues called “Attached” by Amir Levine and Rachel Heller. They say that dating advice recommending playing hard to get and not initiating much is counterproductive for especially the anxiously attached. Because you let the other set the tone, you can become a magnet for avoidants apparently. They feel safe when you don’t initiate. They advocate for open communication of what you expect (I’d be cautious with this as LVM will use it against you) and most i…

Well there is something behind this claim, but not as you think… Some women who are sexually abused are drawn to BDSM because their body wants to finish the trauma cycle. That’s what trauma survivors do - they want to finish the trauma cycle and thaw or shake out of this perpetual fight/flight/freeze state of hypervigilance. Unfortunately, BDSM is shit therapy. It is not safe and not wholesome, and the body can not come out of the cycle. Instead, BDSM reinforces the cycle and victims might even …

Love your thermostat-explanation. I had a boyfriend like that too. I hear her, I do, but I’d like my career to take precedence over his, and for him to work as much or less than I. How do I make that work with him earning more? Or is it a weird thing to want? I thought maybe to find a man who comes from a wealthy background, or is a smart investor or something.

Uhuh. I still don’t know what was wrong with my ex. Was he avoidant? Not in love with me? Mentally ill? Who knows! What stood out most to me as well is the warning about ‘stringers’. Any man who has been in a long relationship without marriage, is probably a stringer. Just one LTR is an indication of a marriage-phobe! Woah. And yeah obviously I’ve been had by several of them. god. Wasting my time…

I have a good masters’ degree, and am kind of wary about dating someone with the same level of education (or more) as me. I had two long relationships like that and while they weren’t super bad, I always felt they were a bit controlling. They saw my earning potential and tried to push me in a certain direction. I feel more comfortable in relations where the man is younger and slightly less educated (but still smart enough to keep up with intellectual conversation). They tended to respect me and …

This could have been written by me, for real. You can trust your feelings and your instincts here. If you give him another chance to explain or grow, or give him the benefit of the doubt, you’ll only grow attached more and after a while your instincts will be going off like a siren but you’re in too deep to get out of it without damage. If he really wants to change for the better, he will and he will find a way to reach you. If he wanted to, he would. So you choose you.

So far I find OLD to be an exercise in maintaining standards. I’ve hardly liked anyone yet, even though it’s becoming more and more tempting to give “not terrible” a chance. 95% is absolute shit. Before OLD I had no idea netflix, pizza and beer were actual personality traits.

Sometimes I'm afraid I'm not humble enough. A lot of people seem to think this is an important characteristic to have and dislike 'braggers'. I don't see it as bragging. Ever since I learned to love myself, I see myself for the awesome and talented women that I am and I'm not afraid to show it. I absolutely LOVE it when other women are unapologetically telling me what they're good at. Bragging people are these weird unaccomplished men who don't know shit about anything but will still try to tell…

Could there be a silver lining to this? I mean, I’d argue that the men who fall victim to the porn industry were never very high value in the first place. Thanks to porn and liberal feminism it just became way easier to spot their shitty behavior. In summary; there have always been this many LVM, it’s just more obvious now. However, I do concur on how it makes dating on the whole a less pleasurable experience.

My stomach dropped when I read that. I’m so sorry. Please cancel the wedding - don’t explain to him. Don’t talk to him. He’ll know why! It will be hard, and you will be hurt… but you’ll be way less hurt than if you married and had to divorce him. You said earlier in your comments this is the 3rd relationship you ended since FDS. You’re really strong. You will get over this.

I struggle with ADD, and I try to mitigate it with this: accept 80% good. I am a perfectionist and if I want to eat good 100% of the time, have a spotless home and never miss a walk or workout… that’s just impossible. And it makes me feel like a failure. But adapting a mindset of “I want to do these things for myself, and it only has to be good enough” I can kind of get out of that performative self care trap. Hope this helps!

Hmm. For me the analogy kinda works. I hate shopping. There’s so much shit being sold, stuff or clothing that polluted the environment in making it, and then breaks after a few times and ends up in the landfill. Sounds like LVM much? Lol. I’d rather keep my money. Saving is easy y’all 😂

Of course she should have all the freedom in the world to choose being miserable! Please do not muddle her with good advice! That is what LV people do best; drag everyone down to their level. They are crabs in a bucket.

So good on you!! Well done! Care to share some of your goals? I’ve been in a very similar situation. He didn’t fight for me either when I broke up and I still can’t wrap my head around it. Just chiming in with my two cents: I love this sub and I think the mods do an amazing job given the shit they probably have to wade through on a daily basis. That said, I do have to take regular breaks from the sub because some of the content is so negative it makes me anxious. Last year when the pandemic struck hard, I also ignored a lot of the news and limited it to once a day. It’s good to be informed but too much news about the sick, dead, and the hospitals running over gave me chest pain.

You can’t see FDS as completely politically neutral. Given the current state of the world, women’s rights are inherently progressive. I do see why you would want to have dialogue with someone from the other side (conservative) to get a balanced view, but a woman who voted for Trump has no place in the FDS podcast.

I’m a bit disheartened. Now I’ve spent some time on here, on other feminist subs and with the podcast, I’m starting to see how misogyny permeates everything in our culture. It’s in songs, it’s in family life, it’s in everyday discourse, it’s on TV, it’s in academia, it’s in women themselves. Women hate themselves and other women for being women. And it’s absolutely absolutely everywhere. It’s even in me, too! And I’m still trying to untangle what was programmed in me by patriarchy, and what is m…

Oof. I found FDS two years ago. I didn’t understand it back then. My relationships up until then had been stable, but unsatisfying. I wanted passion, and found it in an abusive relationship. I’m not sure whether to be grateful or angry. Angry for his disrespect, or grateful because I can now clearly see where I need to heal. Attachment trauma, boundaries, etc.

I saw “Titanic” last week. The main protagonist, Rose, gets swept up in a whirlwind romance with Jack and after the whole ordeal she changes her life for good. But it’s not about their love and relationship at all. It’s about her! This change was already coming. She was sick of her life and Jack functioned as a catalyst in this: he showed her what life could be like otherwise. And then she goes out and lives to her own drum.

It took me a while before I realized my ex was into porn. He’s a very moral and gentle man, a “demisexual” and a pleaser in bed. Yet he managed to get himself addicted to it enough to ruin his ability to hold an erection and cum during intercourse. So much for his morals, I guess. So disappointed. He never could marvel at the beauty of nature and the world around us… that should have warned me of his fried dopamine receptors. Also the dead look in his eyes. I am angry and sorry at the same time.…

I just realized my last relationship was more affected by porn than I thought. I’m so sad, hurt and angry! How do I vet for porn use early on, without inviting talk about sex? I get really creepy vibes from Eckhart Tolle. Today I watched a video from him of which the first half was really really good … and then he started talking about his abusive father. He mentioned his mother didn’t know which words triggered his dad’s violence (while he did at the age of 7) and that his father had a bad childhood because of his sisters and his mother. Wat. Some of his teachings are really good so it’s a shame.

That sounds great, but know that you can never label anyone “high value” indefinitely. I would be mindful of the fact that he likes videogames, and of your possibly not-so-high attraction to him (I read your comment about it). Dead bedroom is a nightmare. Stay vetting, stay vigilant, I wish you the best.

I’m kinda torn about this because secretly this is exactly what I want. I would like to procreate, but there’s no way in hell I’m going to be a homemaker and take care of the children. I have a dream and a business to expand. I would love for a man to stay at home, take care of me, my home and our child. To come home to a warm meal after a satisfying day of building my empire! Like all 1950’s but gender swapped. But because men like that don’t exist I consider myself to be childfree from now on.…

I am so happy for you! Well done to leveling up like that, it’s not easy! I can tell you, I have been in a similar situation and from now on you will probably enjoy sex a lot more! Not the casual or rough kind (if any guy would try to spank me now I’d slap them right back lol) but genuine lovemaking. And it’s one of the best feelings in the world. So stay strong and don’t settle for less queen!

Well, actually, I would. Depending on how sick he is and whether I’ve got anything major scheduled. I will not accept a job so inflexible that I can not take time off to care for family. The idea here is though that men and women are not the same, and love in different ways, thus a man needs to make more effort than a woman in the same situation. One day when I was reeling from food poisoning I kinda arm-wrestled my ex into working from home. He resented me for it. (He had days of care-leave in …

Can we specifically add “shaves/cleans his butt”? 😂 No I don’t have any personal bad experience with this, but please refer to Daniel Sloss’s “jigsaw” show on Netflix for more information!

So true. At some point, when you love and respect yourself and you’re on the right path, things just kind of flow. You only need to remove some obstacles here and there and then the universe will take you where you need to be! “Not today Satan”, I’m gonna borrow that LOL.

I’m sorry. I recognize this: the conditioning to be nice makes us default to this behavior whenever we’re unprepared :( I kind of want to roleplay-practice being a bitch in several scenarios. 😂

I’m not impressed tbh, making sure your sick partner is comfortable before you leave the house sounds more like basic decency to me. The bar is on the floor.

I cannot read the article but if you disassociate during sex you probably either: do not want to have sex at that time or with that person, so get out asap have sexual trauma that needs to be resolved. I used to low-key disassociate during sex with someone I didn’t know very well. That’s how I found out casual sex was not for me, only when I’m properly emotionally attached to someone can I be fully present in the moment.

Well I do remember research that said women were happiest when their male partners were at least 10 kgs heavier than them. And I feel this insecurity myself too when I’m with a smaller man so I wouldn’t do it. But I also know of a happily married and still passionate couple (about 30 years together) where he looks like a stick figure and she’s Venus of Willendorf. As for slightly shorter: no experience but I would be willing to try - I’m somewhat tall myself.

Well, first of all, don’t beat yourself up about it. Crushes are natural, but you can minimize the impact of them. Imagine him pooping! Or something else disgusting. It can be hard, but whatever you do, don’t let him live rent-free in your head. Also ask yourself: what does he add to your life, outside of your relationship goals? Does he have a good network that can help you find a better job? Does he buy you nice things? Does he fix your cupboard etc. etc. Recently a book was shared on this sub…

Oooh I can’t wait to give this a listen! Gail Dines is my new idol lol, how savage she is when it comes to porn.

I 100% recommend the recent (june 9th) FDS podcast in which they interviewed Dr. Gail Dines, a radfem professor who is very much anti-porn and she words it very eloquently. I’m going to listen to it again soon because it was so full of TRUTH. Heartily recommended to anyone who wants to learn more about why the porn industry (and the patriarchy) is harmful to EVERYONE. Not just women.

There’s always been a lot of resentment in the BDSM-community towards the idea that their kinks are actually signs of mental issues, trauma or coping mechanisms. But I personally found this to be true actually. These people need help, not enabling and positivity.

Listen to yourself and yourself only. Most people are stupid, naive and/or do not have your best interests at heart.

Oh, definitely this. Some proof: now that women are being allowed (barf) to enter college, there’s actually more women than men graduating with better grades to boot!

Good analysis! In the case of Boys over flowers it’s even a bit worse: the good love interest doesn’t even take an active interest in her. You know this whole thread is making me realize a lot of my favorite media probably portray downright abusive relationships. Beauty and the Beast comes to mind.

Seconding Matthew and Mary, I adore them, but I’m on my umpteenth rewatch right now and it confuses me how he never actually actively courts her. No flowers or gifts or dates or anything. But I believe none of the men in the show do that. How do you feel about that?

Your comment really spoke to me, sadly. This is how I felt in my most recent relationship. I left him and I’m having a hard time coping. But I want to be a priority.

Yeah it’s a typical strategy employed by emotionally avoidant people, either conscious or subconscious, in order to avoid forming a real attachment.
