Go live your dream .. do you feel encouraged? A little, yes. Thank you. :) I want you to go and live your dreams too.

why do women need to be encouraged? Because women have emotions too? o_O I did. Great. Now you can encourage others to live their dreams.

Opening up the workforce is more than a strictly feminist endeavor. It usually involves partnerships with the industry and working to create more welcoming atmospheres and incentives. There are quite a few scholarships for women wanting to go into tech, for example. There are also scholarships for men wanting to go into nursing or social work. Actually, male social workers are desperately needed. So I would spread the word.

But feminism has a long history of taking over the workplace That's pretty awesome.
/r/MensRights07/04/14 08:56 AM

Is it also a problem that there are so few men in nursing, or HR, or teaching? Yes. What is feminism doing about those problems? By challenging gender roles and trying to make all jobs inclusive of people of all genders. Feminism has a long history of opening up the workplace.

The lack of women and lack of inclusiveness is what's wrong with having a lack of women in the field.

Me: However, MRAs will be damned if they acknowledge the lived experience of women paints men as domineering in society. ... You: Women are told that men are domineering in society so a woman's testimony in this is almost completely useless. Okay. I don't see a disagreement here.

As a feminist, I think the tech community does NOT work fine without females women. Women should be encouraged to enter the tech community if they want to. I'm glad people are speaking up and trying to make opportunities available.

You can't make public policy on the back of anecdotes. That's not "invalidating lived experiences" -- it's simply the very fundamental idea of rational inquiry upon which everything from judicial fairness to scientific advancement are built. You're not even going to try to deny that you think someone's lived experience is mostly irrelevant? Okay. I just don't see where the disagreement between us lies.

I'm not in the least bit suprised that an AMRista would deny that the implication that all men have to fear in society is "someone on tumblr being mean about my fedora" downplays violence against men. So are you saying that men worry about threats of violence from women as a widespread social issue? If so, I'm sorry. I misunderstood your position. But the point still stands that the idea that she's downplaying any violence isn't clear.
/r/MensRights07/04/14 06:54 AM

Just stop downplaying violence against men, as the person in this post clearly does. Clearly.

However, our society unfortunately tends to downplay, overlook, ignore, or simply laugh at violence against men. This needs to change. By telling women who speak out about violence to "shut up"? By writing off the fears of violence that this woman has? By saying that men are more likely to be victims of violence when the issue of violence against women comes up? Seriously? Social justice isn't some zero-sum game. I believe that many women live in fear. I believe that there are rational reasons f…

They're referencing statistics. You're referencing hypothetical "lived experiences". You're trying to invalidate a lived experience with statistics. You: State that men are more likely to be victims of violent attacks. men are more likely to be the victims of violent attacks. Makes perfect sense. You: Go on to state that fears of violence women have are not based in reality / on fact. Because by insinuating that women face widespread socialized violence from men as a normalized part of women's lives, she is clearly framing men as being violent toward women and blatantly ignoring the true victims of violence: men. Hey, cut it with the ableist and misogynistic slurs. When we're talking about my students in my classroom, we're talking about American society. Racism against white people isn't a thing.
/r/MensRights04/04/14 10:23 AM
1

So other words you will allow any and all black students be racist towards any and all white students and won't do a dam thing about it. Of course I'd do something about it -- I'd join in and make sure the white students don't talk back. Racism against white people isn't an issue or an actual thing.
/r/MensRights04/04/14 10:11 AM
1

Then how can one be disrespectful when you welcome racism when it comes from blacks directed towards whites? You can't be racist toward white people -- at least not in a way that's particularly worrisome.

Start by teaching girls to be respectful of the biological instincts of boys, and to control themselves by wearing appropriate clothing. Society is a 2-way street no matter how much you want your Matriarchy. Men really shouldn't dictate how women should dress.
/r/MensRights03/04/14 07:40 AM

It seems like you have very little experience working with and setting reasonable expectations for children. I set my expectations unreasonably high -- like expecting students not to sexually harass each other regardless of the clothes they happen to wear. I'm kind of mean that way.

I appreciate the thought and effort you put into this post, but I don't think wearing yoga pants is comparable to having students with disruptive disabilities in the classroom. We do have children with disabilities in the classroom though -- some with severe mental and cognitive issues. These children with disabilities can "act out," but in all honestly, it's not really a problem. All the students are still expected to do their work.
/r/MensRights03/04/14 04:36 AM
-17

"But the students should be able to control themselves," at least that is what you seem to think Yes. I do think that. But yoga pants are not comparable to deadly weapons in my opinion.
/r/MensRights03/04/14 04:25 AM

I disagree. I don't think the issue of wearing yoga pants to school is like bringing weapons onto school grounds.

What standard am I holding the boys to but not the girls? For the record, I also think you can teach girls to be respectful, and you can expect them to control themselves -- especially middle school students. I thought that would have been assumed. I'm sorry if I wan't clear.

I don't know any white female teachers teaching black boys about their male privilege, but I suppose it would be the same as from any other teacher teaching any student about male privilege. We don't create separate lesson plans for students of different backgrounds.

Not to mention life expectancy, probability of violent death, incarceration, etc. Yes, yes, and white people are more likely to commit suicide than most other people. I'm curious how your school reconciles black boy's lack of scholastic achievement relative to black girls and "male privilege?" How do you explain "male privilege" to black boys, as a white female teacher? What do you mean? According to standardized testing results, boys are slightly outperforming girls at the school, though not by much. Privileged in what sense? How do gender roles hurt boys and girls? Specifics of what is discussed in the classroom are confidential. If you're interested in learning more about how some educators deal with diversity in the classroom, including gender, class, race, etc... She's even bragging now how one of the councillors at her school emotionally abuses boys by shaming them for their original sin(privilege). Obviously, you know better about how to help children deal with complex social and personal issues better than a trained child psychiatrist. You are so smart. Maybe if you could explain this using magnets, I'll make sure to pass that along too.

Why not give some specifics about the sexism they teach? That boys are privileged in society giving them some advantages. Gender roles can hurt everyone. Basic sociology. Of course, with a psychiatrist, it's more about listening to the students rather than teaching to them.

Shout from the roof tops what a righteous gender warrior you are! Don't forget, I also point out white privilege too. And class privilege, and ability privilege, and cultural privilege, and educational privilege, heterosexual privilege, and... well, you get the idea. I'm more than a feminist.

Keep talking. They are a professional child psychiatrist, and it's important for them to "be real" with the kids. So they talk about racism, sexism, classism, ableism, etc along with things like their emotions and how to connect with others.

It's difficult to separate physical maturity from cognitive maturity as the brain continues to grow and develop after birth. This can affect things like the age at which certain kids read. That means that a child who is struggling to read may be developing a bit slower or simply be younger than the other kids. This doesn't mean the child has a learning disability or is slow. So reading is one cognitive behavior linked to physical development, another is the ability to sit still. Sitting still re…

And by mature do you mean "becomes more obedient to authority," or "more able to take a situation seriously"? As in, they can often hit puberty later than some of the girls. People develop and mature at different rates. Boys tend to hit puberty later than girls which affects their development -- not in a bad way mind you.

There's an article you can read here that talks about changes in the brain at puberty. http://www.livescience.com/21461-teen-brain-adolescence-facts.html Keep in mind that even though on average, girls do enter puberty sooner than boys, each person's rate of development is unique. It's quite common for some boys to mature faster than some girls. Also, sitting still has more to do with the proprioceptive system and attention. This means that sitting still has little to do with a child's ability t…

You do realize that considering obedience and having a greater aversion to stillness as 'maturity' is the type of poisonous and de-facto misandric that warrants this subreddit's existence, right? That's a good question. And there's a lot of reasons. One reason I fully support such programs is that it's inclusive. I don't want children to feel their continuation in the classroom is conditional. Imagine how a kindergartner must feel if one of their peers is placed in another school because of behavioral or performance issues. Does this mean they could be removed too if they don't meet the teacher's standards? That can cause a lot of anxiety and fear for a child. Secondly, I know this is be…

As a primary school educator, I don't know what goes on in every school. I can only talk about what goes on at my school. PE is being cut. This is bad. Actually, lots of thing are being cut. I wish we could have infinite amounts of money for education, but we don't. On the plus side, we have a lot more paraprofessionals working with children with disabilities at the school. Geeze, a feminist pedo-apologist. Normally, I roll my eyes when MRAs make posts about women / feminists behaving badly, but I have to admit, this is worthy of calling attention. What Miss Millett may not realize or may have forgotten is that cognitive development takes a long time, and children are not "small adults." Both boys and girls need recess not only to burn off energy, but a lot of learning is linked to physical movement. If children are unable to move, it may actually cause cognitive developmental delays and social-emotional troubles -- this is particularly true for the extremely young kids. I can assure you that the staff at these schools understand this, and they will try to give these kids plenty of opportunity to exercise even with reduced recess.

No offense, but this isn't just rape, it's the statutory rape of a 13 and 14 year old. And from the arrest and bail, it seems the police are taking this very seriously. Innocent until proven guilty is not for public opinion but for the courts. It means the burden of proof is on the prosecutor to demonstrate guilt. It's important to get the word out about this man to the community regardless of his eventual conviction since he may have had contact with other minors.

All things happening now relate to the past. The reason that k-12 teaching is a female-dominated space has its roots in the early school system. To this day, it's still seen as a feminine profession, thus it's undervalued and continues to drive men, and to a lesser extent women, elsewhere.

Your response indicates you either are unfamiliar with the theory or just don't understand it. So says the person who claims expecting women yield into domestic servitude for their husbands is actually about men taking care of women. I find it interesting that now you think benevolent sexism is no longer a "privilege," but is actually "caustic to gender equity and restrict women’s personal, professional, political, and social opportunities." What caused the change of heart?
/r/MensRights03/01/14 05:53 PM

So, let me get this straight. A Victorian narrative that told women their primary goal should be caregivers for their husbands, that they should "yield" to the desires of a man who was the moral center of the household, and that the husband should expect adoration and submissiveness, is really about men caring, giving adoration, and protecting women? I'm sorry. That makes no sense. And there's nothing "benevolent" about treating women like property.

B) we were discussing the feminist lie that feminism is about helping men too, when in reality all you do is mock men and their concerns. Oh, I'm flattered, but you shouldn't confuse me as a representation of feminism. For my actual, real life, social involvement, I was very much invested in addressing male issues in college. I worked with several groups back then. Though, I'm now more focused on education and assisting children with disabilities. C) if I were to PM you you'd run hysterically cr…

What feminists call "benevolent sexism" is what I am calling the privilege of care - the privilege of being able to demand adoration and protection from the opposite sex. And you're saying this in relation to the angel in the house narrative? I think my jaw just hit the floor.

/r/MensRights02/01/14 08:47 PM

The angel in the house is a notoriously sexist concept from the Victorian era, and you're using that to say that gives women some kind of privilege? Okay, here's a question. If women represent angels, who represents god they are subservient to? Who are they to take orders from and please?

Don't you consider it odd that you can't simply say "gendered insults are wrong"? You have to say "gendered insults against women are wrong." No, I don't because you're making up quotes for starters.

Part of this is the romantic notion dating back to the Middle Ages that women (or at least ladies) exist on a higher moral plane. This apotheosis of the feminine was heightened in the Victorian era, and persists in our culture today... When we study human behavior in social science... Are you sure you're a social scientist? I mean, no offense, but I read a lot of narratives of men and women from the Victorian age, and women were never depicted to exist on a "higher moral plane." Morality, purity…

There was a time when feminism didn't have much academic backing. Sure, when women weren't allowed in higher education maybe. Are you rejecting the statement just because you don't like it when women are criticized in any way? As someone with an English degree, I do a lot more critical analysis than attempting to project my biased assumptions onto the author when reading. And more importantly, what power do you perceive the truth to give you? Mo…

I'm not a sociologist, so I won't comment on any studies. However, remember, the meaning of words not only comes from what you say, but how you say it and why. When you say, or rather, complain that women are mean and get away with it, it sounds extremely bitter. It plays into the misogynistic narrative that women are cruel and not to be trusted. It also plays into the misogynistic narrative that women are (or should be) coddled like children because they act like children. There are lots of cruel people in this world who get away with lots of bad stuff. There's no reason to direct your bitterness about this specifically toward women unless you're bitt…

Well, I wouldn't equate gendered insults against men with gendered insults against women because the latter can tie into institutions of historical oppression, but in general, slurs can be used to hurt people which is not okay. All of us must change as we go through life. It's part of the maturing process. Goodness knows I'm far from perfect myself, but I try to change myself for the better every day. The benefit to not coming across as misogynistic would be to be more pro-social and an increased understanding of how your words and attitudes can be taken by others. This is a valuable skill to be sure. Because women are superior. Women, like men, are people. And I would hope you would want to treat people with respect. …

I think you should probably examine what social constructs would have someone conclude your behavior could be seen as misogynistic. Once you recognize the off-putting nature of your comments from their perspective, you can change your behavior to become more pro-social if you wish. Otherwise, you can convince yourself that the other person must be wrong and move on. I recommend the personal growth option, but most people opt for the second including myself sometimes.

This is what you have done, feminists, with your insidious "rape is rape" mantra and your insistence that nothing is worse than rape, and your exploitation of the patriarchal principle of male disposability and its correlate "women are wonderful and must be protected no matter what", and this endless talk of lifelong trauma. Yes, in your xenophobic European centered reality I was thinking more US / western civilization since I come from the US, and most English speaking Redditors are part of Western civilization. It's context, not xenophobia. History shows that women have had power in the state at levels reaching all the way to the top. Women had important roles in history, for sure, but you can't seriously be saying that women historically played an equal or greater role as political leaders. Is that what you belie…

/r/MensRights13/11/13 06:41 AM

So let me get this straight... Women, historically, had political power of various degrees, therefore it wasn't men who sent other men to war. And the reason men were sent to war and not women was for the benefit of women?
/r/MensRights13/11/13 05:57 AM
1

You can't honestly say that men being forced to fight in a war as opposed to women fighting in a war isn't beneficial to the women who are not having their lives threatened. But women aren't sending men to war. Historically, it was men who sent other men to war. Women had little to no power or control over who got sent to war. Nothing exists in a vacuum, so why would men want to send other men to war and exclude women? Why do this if it wasn't in the best interests of the men who sent all those …
/r/MensRights13/11/13 05:10 AM

men are forced to become disposable so that women can be free to be (forced) to be valuable. Do you honestly believe men are more likely to complete suicide, die at work, and be killed in battle for the benefit of women?
/r/MensRights13/11/13 04:45 AM

if you feel constrained to a male gender role, the problem isn't your agency, but lack thereof. Gender roles hurt everyone. But complaining that you're a "hyper-agent," is a bit silly in my opinion. If we could only be so lucky.
/r/MensRights13/11/13 04:35 AM
1

Are you serious? You're upset because men are given too much agency? I guess the grass really is always greener on the other side. Also, it seems like issues such as workplace deaths might be better solved through unionization and improving work conditions rather than "Men's Rights."
/r/MensRights13/11/13 04:22 AM
1

So you want to take away the negative consequences of agency from men such as having to be accountable for the ills and problems of the world? Also, how can one be a slave-agent? Aren't those two terms polar opposites?
/r/MensRights13/11/13 04:07 AM
1

That makes sense. How does the idea of "men's rights" play into a system in which women have historically lacked agency though? It's like creating a "Christian Rights" group because religious minorities often lack agency in a Christian-dominated society.
/r/MensRights12/11/13 09:48 PM
1

Patriarchy is a terrible made up word that women's studies majors like to sling around I don't think I remember hearing the word "patriarchy" often when taking classes regarding gender in college. Encompassing words like "patriarchy," "privilege," etc... are thrown around a lot by bloggers and laypeople, but most upper division work focuses too much on specifics, like how women are portrayed in a particular novel, to be of any use. What is hypo and hyper agency? I never heard of those before.
/r/MensRights12/11/13 08:57 PM

Belief in a patriarchal society where every man is to blame for all women's problems leads to misandry. I don't think that is what feminism claims. At least, that's not how it was described to me.

In an effort to simply control their husbands women brought about the prohibition of alcohol. Feminist here. To be fair, it worked, and continues to work albeit in different forms now. So, in an effort to control their husbands, women started a world war which has lasted nearly 100 years, has put millions in prison, in the hospital, into slavery, and into the ground... a politically correct GTA could probably still be fun. I'm sure a PC GTA could still be fun, but it would feel nerfed to me to be honest. You can add "gritty" and controversial elements to games, but it's hard to do in a way that's respectful, honest, and entertaining. You're never going to please everyone, but understanding what you're putting into your game and how different audience members react to it can add a lot of depth and meaning to your title.

crime is a hyper masculine environment. I don't know how crime organizations work in real life, but GTA is a work of fiction, and thus the entire world is in control of the developers. They can choose to make it emulate or not emulate reality as they wish. They can also control how they want to address the realities they put into the game. So any misogyny, racism, homophobia, etc... found in real life crime organizations still leaves the creators of GTA open to criticism as to how they choose to…

Well, I don't know why the developers thought it would be a good idea to limit the number of women in the game. It could certainly be demographic-related. It could also be that it's supposed to play into hyper-masculinity by design. In that sense, misogyny would be expected. However, some people might be uncomfortable with misogyny in the game regardless of the context. It also opens up dialog as to how misogyny is communicated through the media at large.

I don't think misogynistic dialog and "talking shit" are interchangeable terms. Misogynistic dialog might be about taking a guy to a strip club which objectifies the women there as pure commodities and eye candy for the benefit of the male agents in the story. Like I said, I haven't played it, so I don't know what exactly is in the game though.

But dialogue in this game demeans everyone... So, you admit there's misogyny in the game.
/r/MensRights08/10/13 12:04 AM

Misogyny how so? Supposedly, some of the dialogue demeans women and the GTA titles tend to derive heavily on the stereotypical male aggression and domination fantasies.

Of course there's misogyny in GTA V. I would be pleasantly surprised if there wasn't or if it was tactfully dealt with given the genre. Who is saying people shouldn't buy it though?

Dworkin did. I never read Dworkin. What did she say exactly? How do you justify being less concerned by dead bodies than you are by a video game? I'm bothered by real world violence in a very different way than concerning messages found in mass media. The emotions are very different. Both should be addressed in their own way.

It's not like you all didn't earn it. Sorry, I didn't mean to make anyone angry. Saying that all men are rapists is offensive. I never said that. Saying that all men are rapists is offensive. Calling the person who said it and her supporters "idiotic' is merely a statement of fact. Who said that? Also what do people with cognitive disabilities have to do with this? So video games that annoy you mean more to you than dead bodies? A lot of things bother me in different ways. I don't have to pick a…

So we should have let Hitler do his thing? Let's leave Hitler out of this one. I don't like to talk about that. Needless to say, Hitler was an invader--a colonizer if you will. No, it's a joke. No, it's not. Feminism has a long and impressive history. What's the goal? That depends on the feminist, though a generalized answer might be "gender equality." To get people to hate you all even more? No. I don't want people to hate feminists more. I acknowledge there's a lot of hate toward feminists alr…

Well, it's not my place to run into other people's countries and cultures and tell them how to act or behave. That's a very colonialist attitude, particularly coming from an American like myself. Regardless, feminism isn't a game, and the goal isn't to "win."

The feminists are losing. No, we're not. At least, I don't think so. Well, I don't think the commercial success of a popular video game franchise has much to do with success or failure of feminism anyway.

Have you ever engaged in a actual, formal, logical debate in your life? I have. They're boring and definitely don't resemble anything like a discussion on reddit. Do you even humanities, brah?

the concept of "Original Sin" is immoral. What does Christian mythology have to do with anything? Since when do either one of us even believe in sin? I'm not telling you what you believe. Yes you are. You believe yourself to be responsible for crimes committed by your parents. There you go again.

I'm just waiting for you to compare the oppression of women and traditional gender roles to slavery. Something like 80%+ of slaves are women.
/r/MensRights10/09/13 05:50 PM

I never argued that the responsibility was equal, just that it was disingenuous to pretend that historically women had no influence on shaping gender roles or perpetuating them. Stop implying women are to blame for their own oppression. It's not only wrong, it's counterproductive.
/r/MensRights09/09/13 11:49 PM

all women are responsible for their own oppression. That's a horrible thing to say.
/r/MensRights09/09/13 11:46 PM

All women--actually everyone for that matter--should have a responsibility to themselves and others to strive for an equitable society. That does not make men and women equally culpable for the historic oppression of women. Also... all women are responsible for their own oppression. You should feel ashamed for writing that.
/r/MensRights09/09/13 08:26 PM

By extension you believe yourself to be responsible for the actions of your father? To a certain degree, of course. We're related. What about your grandmother or grandfather? Of course. If you believe you inherit culpability then you are responsible for patriarchy and gender roles. I inherited this society, and am, in part, responsible for not only maintaining it, but making it better and fixing the mistakes others have made in the past. What I will not do is blame any particular group for their…

In what way are you responsible for the actions of your mother? Because she's my mother and part of my family. I care about her, and she's a part of me that I will always carry around. Should you be punished or jailed because of your mothers actions? I'd go to jail for my own mother, of course. I'd also help take responsibility for her actions in any way that would be helpful.
/r/MensRights09/09/13 05:25 PM

If your mother was a serial killer, do you need to take responsibility for her actions? Yes, of course. As much as I possibly could.

Does this argument also apply to Jews and their input into religious stereotypes and prejudices? Let's say the Jewish people were completely without free will, commanded around by Christians and Muslims like robots. Modern religious tolerance comes along. At what point do the Jewish people become partially responsible for continuing to perpetuate religious stereotypes? It seems according to me and /u/HockesOne, the answer is never. It's the fault of people of other faiths long since dead, and cu…

Women who make the "wrong" decisions only do so because of the influence of men. Do you have anything to add to the conversation that isn't inherently misogynistic? I guess what you're saying is that blaming male institutions for the oppression of women is inherently misogynistic.

That's not what the article is about. The article is about how some researchers ignored female interpersonal violence toward men and non-feminist explanations in their papers. The person who wrote this paper is a feminist as well. No one said it rarely happens. Also remember that gender symmetry regarding domestic violence is used by misogynists to say that women are just as--if not more so--violent than their male counterparts in relationships just because the rate of violence between men and w…

He's saying the data was found with different methods for different sources. There is no agreed upon way to collect and interpret data. But that's true of nearly every peer-reviewed, scientific study.

I don't think you understand how metrics, samples, and methodologies influence data. It's important to remember that data is not the same thing as a conclusion. Like I said, if you want to know the specifics of suicide rates and the science behind it, I would go to /r/askscience. However, nothing you posted seems to conflict with the 3:1 ratio.
/r/MensRights31/08/13 03:10 PM

I'm a bit confused. Why would different methodologies and metrics make it "extremely difficult to get reliable data on this?" Seems like you had no problem googling reliable sources.

I think it gives a misleading impression that all researchers with degrees accept the 1:3 ratio, but it's been shown here that this is not true. Which leading researchers don't accept the 3:1 ratio or some close variant?

I'm not really qualified nor knowledgeable enough in this branch of psychology / sociology about the subject matter to be a good source of information on the issue. Perhaps /r/askscience would be a better place to ask your questions.

I'm not going to respond, but here's some data on what you two were discussing. It was written by the Department of Justice. http://www.bjs.gov/content/pub/pdf/svpjri0809.pdf Table 6, Page 12 shows that inmate on inmate rape is more likely to happen in female prisons. Unfortunately, prison rape is a complicated subject, and I'm not qualified to discuss it. There are other statistics in the PDF if you're interested.

Like I said, the joke wasn't told in a vacuum, but in a professional environment that can come across as hostile toward women. I'm not in the business of telling other women what they should or should not take offense to. Adria Richards is an intelligent woman, and if these kind of remarks make her uncomfortable as a woman in a male-dominated industry, good for her for speaking out. Anyway, I'm not here to debate the issue, just want to be nice to random MRAs for no raisin.

Well, no. I mentioned that the "joke" was part of a systemic issue of sexism in the tech industry. The "joke" doesn't exist in a bubble, but in an environment that can be hostile toward women. Also, the hate she received afterward was also unfair to her. Anyhoo, I see my random upvotes didn't go over well, so I'll go donate to prostate cancer research in /r/mensrights name.
