Uh, yeah, throughout most of human history, and still in some parts of the world today, that has been the case... mostly thanks to (guess who) the church. And the whole point of the article is, the fact that this is true does not necessarily mean that you, personally, are a sexist oppressor. You're defined by your actions, not your gender. That's kinda the whole point.

It doesn't matter if it's "he said/she said" or not. Even accusations that are proven to be factually untrue can still carry social stigma, regardless of the claimed offense.

Because you are in effect attempting to psychoanalyze the writers and viewers of this show, by ascribing motives to them. Just like you are doing armchair TV criticism, by showing what the show is supposed to "represent." Oh, and if you watch all the way through, there are quite a few hints that he really is capable of overcoming problems.
